Ex-runners ramble: Ryan tops nations best in Boston Mile
By RICHARD A. ROSS
BOSTON, MA It was another big race and another defining milestone in the career of Warwicks Aislinn Ryan as she topped a field of the best female high school milers in the country.
She also set the fastest mark of the year (4:49.92) for a female high school miler. Ryan caught long-time rival Nicole Blood of Saratoga Springs at the bell signaling the last lap and went on to beat Blood (4:50.87) down the stretch. The talented field included Lindsey Ferguson of Saratoga Springs, Mary Liz McCurdy of Bayshore, NY and Brittany Sheffey of Belport, NY, among others. Most of the group, including Ryan and Blood, will duke it out again on February 4 at the Millrose Mile at Madison Square Garden. Blood was last years Millrose Mile winner.
In local action, Tri-Valleys Travis Wolfe returned to indoor track after a long-standing absence due to a nagging injury. It feels great to be running again, said Wolfe, who used the developmental meet at Sullivan County Community College to get the kinks out.
Eldreds Catlan Sardina ran his last race for the Yellowjackets. Sardina is moving to Orlando, Florida to be with his mom. His residency there will significantly reduce his tuition at Embrey-Riddle University, where he will study civil engineering in the fall.
On February 3 the schools from Sullivan County will compete against each other at the Sullivan County championship meet. The OCIAA league meet will be held on February 13.
