CHRYSOULA KARADONTES

JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — Chrysoula Karadontes, a resident of the area since 1957, died on Saturday, January 15, 2005 at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center. She was 95.

The daughter of the late Thomas and Evdokia Sikiotis Solomos, she was born April 27, 1909 in Sparta, Greece.

A family statement read: “Our mother was and is loved by all who met her. She is comforting, nurturing and funny. She took good care of everyone in the true tradition of old country selflessness. Mom lives forever in our hearts.”

She is survived by one daughter, Anne Maus; two sons, Peter and Thomas Karadontes; one sister, Pitsa Benetos; one brother, Dimitri Solomos; four grandchildren, Georgia Hart and Andrew, Christine, and James Karadontes; three great-grandchildren, Nicholas Karadontes and Kali and Jared Hart; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Andrew Karadontes; one son, Christopher; her daughter-in-law, Michele; her son-in-law, Joseph Maus; one sister, Voula Ihlepoulos; and two brothers, Potis and Stratis Solomos.

Services were held on Wednesday, January 19, 2005 at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville.

Interment will be in the Laurel Hill Cemetery in White Sulphur Springs.

ALICE A. WATSON LAABS

HAWLEY, PA — Alice A. Watson Laabs, a guest of Twin Cedars Assisted Living Center in Hawley, died following an illness on January 15, 2005 at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, PA. She was 94.

The daughter of the late Earl and Eva Cron Watson, she was born in Scranton, PA.

She worked as a weaver and cutter at Anke’s Mill in Hawley. She was a member of the St. Paul’s Evanglical Lutheran Church in Hawley and a member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church ULCW and Willing Workers. She was a former member of the Daughters of America, the Rebecca Lodge and the Hawley Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Herman R. Laabs, who died in 1978, and by her son, Ronald.

She is survived by her daughter, Jean Gumble of Paupack; her son, Richard Laabs of Hawley; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held on Wednesday, January 19 at Teeter’s East Chapel with Reverend David Heckler, Pastor at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, officiating.

Interment is at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Paupack.

AGNES HOLLAR LULAND

WELCOME LAKE, PA — Agnes Hollar Luland, a four-year resident of Welcome Lake and a former resident of Rutherford, NJ and Riverview, FL, died unexpectedly on Saturday, January 15, 2005 at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, PA. She was 95.

The daughter of the late John Hollar and Aggie Martin, she was born in Passaic, NJ.

She attended Drake’s Business School in New Jersey for many years and she was a former member of Trinity Methodist Church in Clifton, NJ. She was a retired bookkeeper for Belview Surgical Supply in Passiac, NJ and a Methodist.

She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Robert Luland.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Philpot of Beach Lake; her son, Robert of Beachwood, NJ; and eight grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Services were held on Tuesday, January 18 at Teeter’s East Chapel in Hawley with Reverend Martin L. Cox, Jr., Pastor officiating.

Interment is at the Green Gates Cemetery in Hawley.


WALTER ALFRED MORGAN

KERHONKSON, NY — Walter Alfred Morgan, a resident of Kerhonkson and a former resident of Milton, NY, died on Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at home with his family by his side. He was 71.

The son of the late Walter and Mary Masker Morgan, he was born September 22, 1933 in Port Jervis.

He moved to Kerhonkson, where he worked part time for Crystal Run and had a wood-working business, after retiring from his general manager position for Norco in Milton.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and was a member of the AARP. He was extremely proud of his grandson, Walter, who is currently serving the US Army in Iraq.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Joann Lane Morgan at home; a daughter, Della Davis of Margaretville; five sons, Walter L. and Michael of Highland; Carl of Clintondale, NY; David of Clearwater, FL; and Daniel of Gardiner; two brothers, Roland of Sparrowbush, and Russell of Port Jervis; a sister, Thelma Peer of North Hudson; eight grandsons; one granddaughter, Michelle; two great-grandchildren; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, James Morgan; five sisters, Evelyn Hicks, Mildred Violet Morgan, Philamena Talmadge, Sara Morgan and Louella Morgan.

Services were held on January 13 at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home with Reverend Glen Scheyhing officiating.

Cremation will be at H.G. Smith Crematory in Stroudsburg, PA.

GUSTAV H. ‘THE BANANA MAN’ OELKERS

BARRYVILLE, NY — Gustav H. “The Banana Man” Oelkers, a 34-year resident of Barryville, died on Friday, January 14, 2005 at Bon Secours Community Hospital. He was 89.

The son of the late Gustav and Bernadine Steinbrink Oelkers, he was born February 13, 1915 in Brooklyn, NY.

He was the retired owner of Oelkers General Store and the widower of the late Ruth Emily Olsen Oelkers who died August 3, 2002.

He is survived by three daughters, Norma Notzold of Westchester, PA, Emily Oelkers of Barryville, and Verna Jones of Hawley, PA; five grandchildren, Kirsten Hamrahl, Paul Notzold, Britte Notzold, and Thomas and Brian Jones; one great-granddaughter, Sofia Hamrahl; and nieces and nephews.

Services were held on Sunday, January 16, 2005 at the Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Home in Barryville with Pastor Linda Bohs officiating.

Interment will be in the spring in the Lutheran Cemetery in North Branch, NY.

MABEL M. PARSONS

NORTH BRANCH, NY — Mabel M. Parsons, a resident of North Branch and a lifelong area resident, died on January 10, 2005 at the Roscoe Community Nursing Home in Roscoe. She was 90.

The daughter of the late Martin and Dora Swendsen Jensen, she was born November 23, 1914 in Damascus, PA. She was married the Harry Parsons until he passed in July 1985. She was a homemaker. She is survived by her children, Barbara Whitley of North Branch, Alice Theis of Tyler Hill, PA, Elinor Fitch of Callicoon Center, Harriett Paynter of Greeley, PA, Henry of Callicoon Center, Rita Davis of North Branch, NY, and Roger of Oneida, TN; 19 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 14 great great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by Margaret Hust and Myra Jane Parsons.

Services were held on January 14 at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville with Pastor Bob Paquet officiating.

Interment will be in the spring at Hillside Cemetery in Damascus, PA.

CATHERINE M. ROYCE

JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — Catherine M. Royce, a resident of Jeffersonville and an 18-year seasonal resident of Spring Hill, FL, died on Friday, January 7, 2005 at Heritage Park Care and Rehabilitation Center in Bradenton, FL. She was 81.

The daughter of Elizabeth Magdaline Baumgardt and Thomas Casper Brown, she was born in Callicoon, NY on May 27, 1923.

She was a member of the Kenoza Lake United Methodist Church and a member of the choir. She was a 4-H leader and a 31-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of Cornell Cooperative Extension.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Sidney and Doris Royce of Cochecton; a daughter, Leah Mae and her husband Ed Waldron of Jeffersonville; two grandchildren, Steven and his wife Melissa and their daughters: Hannah and Haley of Palmetto, FL, and Jennifer and her husband Dan of Roanoke, VA.

Cremation was made in Florida.

A memorial service was held on Sunday, January 16 at the Kenoza Lake United Methodist Church.

JOSEPH ‘GENE’ SHERIDAN

HAWLEY, PA — Joseph “Gene” Sheridan, a resident of Hawley, died on Saturday, January 8, 2005 at Wayne Memorial Hospital following an illness. He was 76.

The son of the late Joseph E. and Rose Meyers Sheridan, he was born in Hawley on December 19, 1928.

A graduate of Hawley High School, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 to 1952 and during the Korean War with his brother Tom. The brothers owned and operated Sheridan’s Market in Hawley. Sheridan was a member of the Queen of Peace parish, a third-degree member of Hawley Knights of Columbus, a past member of the Hawley Fire Company, where he served as secretary, and a member of the North American Legion Post Number 311 and VFW Post Number 5823.

He was a past president of the first Hawley Planning Commission, a former Park and Recreation Commission president, and a former member of the Hawley Borough Council and the Wayne County Board of Assistance.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, the former Louise C. Slaier; two daughters, Michelle and her husband James Eisele of Allentown and Laurie and her husband Kenneth D’Andrea of Marltone, NJ; a brother, Thomas and his wife Wanda Sheridan of Hawley; three grandchildren, Nicole, Gabrielle and Phillip; and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Catherine Sullivan.

Services were held on Tuesday, January 4 at the Hessling Funeral Home in Honesdale, followed by a mass of Christian Burial at Queen of Peace Church in Hawley.

Interment was in the parish cemetery.

TERRY A. WILSON

LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — Terry A. Wilson, a resident of Livingston Manor and a lifelong area resident, died on Friday, January 7, 2005 at his home. He was 32.

The son of the Kathleen Chapman Wilson and the late George Wilson Jr., he was born June 24, 1972 in Liberty, NY.

He worked as a logger.

He is survived by his mother and her companion, Barry Klein of White Sulphur Springs; a son, Tyler Wilson and his mother, Jody Minton; his paternal grandmother, Helen Wilson of Lava; a sister, Tammy “Mimi” Wilson and her companion, Damon Knack, and two nephews, Jeremy and Joshua Knack, all of White Sulphur Springs; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and his faithful canine companion, Sportster.

Services were held on Tuesday, January 11 at the White Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church with Pastor Bridgette LeConey officiating.

Cremation will be made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope.
