Foggy and soggy weather

Damp winter weather kept Sullivan County residents on their toes last week. A day-long, near-impenetrable blanket of fog obscured the landscape as pictured at the government center and turned driving into a major challenge on January 13.

The fog was followed by heavy rain and snow into Friday morning, which caused a mudslide on Hollow Road in Lumberland, opposite the Pond Eddy post office. Highway Superintendent Charles Hallock said the slide of 25 to 30 cubic yards of soil was prompted when an oak tree toppled in the muddy embankment. The tree knocked out local electric service in the morning and the highway department cleanup of the mudslide kept Hollow Road closed until late afternoon.
