Sullivan County Legislators are split on five-casino deal

MONTICELLO, NY—There are no casinos yet, but a high-stakes poker game that will impact the future of Indian casinos in Sullivan County has begun.

Governor George Pataki’s Indian gaming advisor Greg Allen dealt the first cards earlier this month when he advised county legislators that winning the approval of Congress and the Secretary of Interior for one or more casinos would likely require a deal combining land settlements.

MONTICELLO, NY —Anticipating that they will be leaving Albany at the beginning of February with either a negotiated agreement that they can live with or certain knowledge that they won’t get such an agreement, members of the Sullivan County Legislature on Tuesday announced that they will be considering Governor Pataki’s Indian gaming expansion proposal at a special meeting, which will be called for February 3.

Breaking the cycle of violence

LIBERTY, NY—I will call her Linda although that’s not her name.

She’s 39 and a survivor of a battered wife relationship. Actually, she’s better than a survivor. She’s a tower of strength who now works at a program called Safe Passage to save women like herself from abusive relationships.

“I love my job at the agency,” she said. “It’s simply wonderful to think that I can help save battered women who are just like I was.”
