Holiday previews set the stage for coming league battles

LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY—The whirlwind of December basketball tournaments is over now and teams can take stock of their recent performances against foes great and small. The focus now turns to the upcoming key league games that make up the majority of the January and February schedule.

Those games will determine who will reign supreme in their division, who will make the cut to gain entry into the sectional tournament, and team seeding for that rite of passage that produces the champions in each of the classes from the tiny “D” schools to the “AA” behemoths.

Girls’ Basketball

Holidays are history, league games loom

Sullivan West (6-1) lost a 45-43 heartbreaker to Cornwall for its only defeat so far. Bulldogs beat Sacred Heart (PA), Fallsburg, Livingston Manor, Monticello, Liberty and Goshen.

Livingston Manor (6-4) beat the Family School, Roscoe twice, Liberty, Chester and Fallsburg while losing to Sullivan West, Chapel Field twice and S.S. Seward.

Tri-Valley (3-5) outlasted James I. O’Neill, Chester and Downsville but succumbed to Highland, Monticello, S.S Seward, Chapel Field and Tuxedo.

Soccer

A great first season

JESSUP, PA—Young soccer players in the under-12 age group from the Sullivan West Central School District formed a team to compete in the newly opened soccer dome, located in Jessup. The team, sponsored by Lander’s River Trips, recently completed its first competitive session and earned second place medals with a record of 9-1-2.

Both losses were to FC America, a club team out of Scranton. The championship game played on December 29 was a close match that ended with the Lander’s team losing 7-5. In the soccer dome, the playing field has four full-size turf indoor soccer fields and can be found on line at the-playing-fields.com.
