DORIS E. BRANNING

FERNCLIFF, NY — Doris E. Branning, a resident of Ferncliff and a former resident of Glenham, NY, died on November 27, 2004 at Ferncliff Nursing Home. She was 78.

The daughter of the late Searle Wood and Madeline Daley, she was born on January 1, 1926 in Narrowsburg, NY.

She was a correction officer at Mattawan Correction Facility for 30 years.

Survivors include her sons, Thomas and his wife Marry of Marlboro, John and his wife Dorothy of FL and Jeff of Monticello; her daughters, Betty and her husband Joseph Volpe of Marlboro, Laurie and her husband Thomas Agunzo of New Windsor, and Cathy and her husband John Rutigliano of Malboro; her grandchildren, John and Nicole Volpe of New Paltz, Kim and George Greiner of Highland, Traci and Aaron Posner and John and Staci Branning, all of FL, Tommy and Eric Agunzo, both of New Windsor, Jay Rutigliano and Carli Rutigliano, both of Marlboro; and eight great greandchildren.

She was predeceased by her sister, LuLu Werneke.

Funeral services were held on November 30 at the DiDonato Funeral Home.

Interment is in the Cedar Hill Cemetery.

CECELIA G. BALLE

NARROWSBURG, NY — Cecelia G. Balle, a resident of Narrowsburg, NY, died November 25, 2004 at her home. She was 93.

The daughter of the late Thomas and Mathilda Muller Holmes, she was born July 9, 1911 in Brooklyn. She was married to Herman G. Balle who passed away in 1993.

She is survived by one daughter, Joan Holbert and her husband Don of Narrowsburg; four grandchildren, Craig and Tami Holbert of Beach Lake, PA, Kyle Holbert of Narrowsburg, Kelly and Dan Carlsen of Hickory, NC, and Patrick Nolan of Bakersfield, CA; six great grandchildren, Danielle and Erica Carlsen, Megan and William Holbert, Annalyse Holbert and Ryan Nolan; and three nephews and one niece.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy Nolan, and a brother, Howard Holmes.

Cremation will be private and at the convenience of the family.

JOHN “JACK” EHRE

HUGUENOT, NY — John “Jack” Ehre, a lifelong area resident, died on Monday, November 22, 2004 at Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis. He was 79.

The son of the late John and Margaret Siebold Ehre, he was born on March 18, 1925 in New York City.

He was a retired Zone Sgt. for the New York State Police in Fishkill and town justice for the Town of Deerpark for 32 years; a member and usher of the Drew United Methodist Church in Port Jervis; a veteran of WWII serving in the US Navy; a member of Roosa-Flemming VFW Post 161 in Port Jervis; a member of the Huguenot Fire Department; Port member of Mountaintop Hunting Club in Big Pond; Tri-State Rod and Gun Club of Port Jervis; and a member of New York State Magistrates Association.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Burorows Ehre, at home; one son, Keith and his companion, Suzan Stinson of Slate Hill; two daughters, Kathy Retallick of Matamoras, PA, and Kelly Banta and her husband Paul of Sparrowbush; one brother, James and his wife Lillian of Port Jervis; four grandchildren Morgan Ehre, Lauren and Anthony Retallick and Tyler Banta; and three nieces.

He was predeceased by his brother, Robert.

Funeral services were held Saturday, November 27 at the Drew United Methodist Church with the Reverend Robert Cassidy officiating.

Interment will be in the Rural Valley Cemetery in Cuddebackville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Drew United Methodist Church in Port Jervis.

EDNA B. HULSE

BETHEL, NY — Edna B. Hulse, a resident of Bethel, died on Monday November 22, 2004 at the Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA. She was 88.

The daughter of the late Frank S and Lulu Knapp Brown, she was born April 20, 1916 in Bethel. She was the widow of Charles M. Hulse.

A retired teacher for the Bodkin Elementary School in Ann-Arudel, MD, she was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church, AARP and the National Retired Teachers Association.

She is survived by two sons and daughters in-law, Charles F. and Phyllis Hulse of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Stephen F. and Cindy Hulse of Bainbridge, PA, and three grandchildren.

Her brother, Ford Brown, predeceased her.

Services were held at the Bethel Presbyterian Church with Reverend Alex McLean officiating.

Interment will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in Bethel.


THOMAS J. LEGER

SPARROWBUSH, NY — Thomas J. Leger, a resident of Sparrowbush and a 50-year resident of the area, died on Monday, November 22, 2004 at the Orange Regional Medical Center, Horton Campus, in Middletown. He was 78.

The son of the late Walter and Josephine Kaczorek Ligarzewski, he was born on May 18, 1926 in Brooklyn.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s R.C. Church in Matamoras, PA; a Navy Medic during WW II; a member of the Roosa-Fleming VFW Post No 161; and Post Color Guard.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian Gibadlo Leger at home; two sons, Stephen of Sparrowbush and Kenneth Mark of Philadelphia, PA; two sisters, Mary Risi of Brooklyn and Anne Gallo of Port Jervis; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Stanley and John Ligarewski.

Funeral services were held on November 27.

A mass of resurrection followed in St. Joseph’s R.C. Church with the Rev. August A. Ricciardi officiating.

Interment will be in Quarry Hill Cemetery in Rio.

ADELE ANNA MARGARETHE GOETJEN OTTEN

MOHICAN LAKE, NY — Anna Otten (Adele Anna Margarethe Goetjen), a resident of Mohican Lake, died peacefully on November 24, 2004 at her home in Washington Crossing, PA. She was 97.

Brought up on the family dairy farm in Alfstedt, Germany, she was sent to the Heiderberger Heide to learn housework. At the age of 18, she came to New York to work for the Rechter’s doing housework. At a German dance she met William Otten. They were married on Dec. 17, 1931 and began their own business in Astoria Queens, “Otten’s,” an ice cream parlor.

Anna Otten, with 3 children in tow, ran the store alone when her husband was drafted into the Navy. In 1946, Otten and her husband moved to Bay Ridge, Brooklyn where they opened “Otten’s,” making homemade ice cream, chocolate and candies until they retired in 1966 and moved to Mohican Lake.

Otten was always active. She worked in the store alongside her husband and ran it alone during hunting season. She was a past president of the New York Confectioners Society and active in the Ladies Aid of St. Jacobi’s Lutheran Church in Shohola, PA. In her later years she enjoyd baking, crafting and picking up parishioners who could not drive. She spent every winter for 22 years with her daughter, Alice, and family but she continued to live at Mohican Lake in the summers as long she could drive.

She was predeceased by her husband, William Otten and her sisters, Baby Klaus Goetjen, Johann Goetjen, Bette Haack, Tine Hincke, Hertha Beckmann and Martha Fink.

She is survived by her daughters, Marianna and her husband, Jack Elliott of Hamburg, Elsie and her husband, Neil Giesecke of Brooklyn, Joan and her husband, Ted Wise of River Vale, NJ, and Alice and her husband, Ron Ryll of Washington Crossing, PA; ten grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on November 28 at the Swartz/Givnish Funeral Home in Newtown, PA.

Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, in Queens, NY.

EARLE N. TERWILLIGER

NARROWSBURG, NY — Earle N. Terwilliger, a resident of Narrowsburg, died on Thursday, November 25, 2004. He was 99.

The son of the late Issac B. and Anna Robinson Terwilliger, he was born April 18, 1905 in Westtown. He was married to Mattie Holbert for 72 years until she passed away in 1997.

He was a retired Erie Railroad employee, a member of the Tusten Historical Society and a past president and charter member of the Tusten Senior Citizens. He was also a 75-year member of the United Commercial Travelers (UTC).

He is survived by his son, Roger; five grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren and two great-great-great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Audrey Galus; a granddaughter, Terri Lynn Terwilliger; a sister, Hazel Taylor and by a brother, Harry.

Funeral services were held on Monday, November 29 at the funeral home in Narrowsburg.

Interment will be in Pine Hill Cemetery in Middletown.
