Churches deliver Thanksgiving dinners
NARROWSBURG, NY Church volunteers this year delivered 25 boxes each filled with a turkey and all the items traditionally served during Thanksgiving to area families in need. Donations from community churches and individuals, as well as canned goods from the Narrowsburg Central School, helped make the annual event possible. The offering collected during this years ecumenical Thanksgiving service, which took place at St. Pauls Lutheran Church, went toward the work of the pantry.
In February 2001, Barbara Drollinger of St. Francis Xavier Parish gathered volunteers from St. Francis, St. Pauls Lutheran Church and Narrowsburg United Methodist Church to form the Narrowsburg Ecumenical Food Pantry in an effort to assist those in need within a radius of 15 miles of Narrowsburg. Since then volunteers have staffed the pantry in the basement of St. Francis Parish Hall on Bridge Street on Thursday afternoons to welcome families in need.
The pantry continues to accept donations of food and cash from the public. Items routinely needed include juice, cereal, peanut butter, spaghetti sauce, tuna, canned meats and canned fruits and vegetables. These items may be left at any of the churches or brought to the pantry between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. on Thursdays. Beginning January 1, the pantry will be open on Thursdays from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.
