RUTH CAREY

MONROE, NY — Ruth V. Carey, a 75-year area resident, died at Park Manor Rehabilitation and Health Center in Middletown on Wednesday, November 10. She was 96.

The daughter of the late William Messler and Etta Nagle Messler, she was born in New York City on February 7, 1908.

She was a past president and member of A.A.R.P. Chapter 690 in Monroe, a member of Jolly Seniors of Monroe, a former volunteer at Arden Hill Hospital in Goshen and a member of Mombasha Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary in Monroe.

She was predeceased by her husband, Bernard B. Casey, and her brother, Strafford Messler.

She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Devlin of Jeffersonville and Gertrude Zimmerman of Wells, Maine; a son, Robert J. Carey and his wife JoAnn of Slate Hill; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday, November 12 at Smith, Seaman and Quakenbush Inc Funeral Home. Reverand George Pulparayil officiated.

Interment will be in Monroe Cemetery.

Alice McComack Cooke

MONTICELLO, NY — Alice McCormack Cooke, a long time area resident, died Wednesday, November 10, 2004 at the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 91.

The daughter of the late Dr. Edward P. McCormack and Anna Cahill McCormack, she was born in Albany on September 16, 1913.

She was a graduate of Miss Quinn’s and the Academy of the Holy Names and a member of St. Peter’s Church in Monticello.

She was predeceased by her husband, the former chief judge of New York, Lawrence H. Cooke.

She is survived by her two sons, Edward and his wife Colleen of Monticello and George L. Cooke II and his wife Karen of Rock Hill; her daughter, Mary Lauren Opie and her husband Richard of Albany; nine grandchildren, Lawrence, Austin, Meghan, Alice Kelly, Lauren, Courtney, Rose, Zachary and Alexandria; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth McArdle of Albany and Peggy Ann Mathieson of Saratoga Springs; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral mass was held on Saturday, November 13.

Interment will be at the Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.

GEORGE J. “HAASIE” HAAS

HAWLEY, PA — George J. Hass, a lifelong resident of Hawley, died at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, PA on November 10, 2004. He was 93.

He was the son of the late Rose Matter Haas and George Haas.

A graduate of Hawley High School, he served in the United States Navy during World War II. He worked as an auto dealer for the family business, G. Matter and Sons in Hawley and was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Antique Auto Club of America and his interest in antique cars was a lifelong hobby from Model T Fords to cars of the 1980s. He was often seen driving a 1936 Ford Cabiolet in area parades and shows. He was a member of the Hawley Rotary Club from which he received the Paul Harris Award from the President of Rotary International. He was a member of the school board for over 20 years with Hawley and Wallenpaupack schools and he continued as a member for WASD Authority.

He received the Paul Harris Fellow Award for his exemplary service to his community through the Hawley Rotary Club. At the time, he had no idea that he would be the honored recipient that night. He thought his family and fellow Rotarians had boarded the bus to meet the president of rotary international in Wilkes-Barre. It was one the few times that Hass was nearly speechless.

He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Muller Haas in 1995.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Cathleen and attorney Jack Spall of Hawley.

A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family with Rev. Klaus G W Molzahn, retired pastor from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, presiding.

Interment will be at Green Gates Cemetery in Hawley.

ROGER W. HESS

CALLICOON, NY — Roger William Hess, a lifetime area resident, died at his home on Saturday, November 13. He was 76.

The son of the late Elmer and Ruth Kellam Hess, he was born in the town of Fremont on April 22, 1928.

He was predeceased by a son, John; a daughter, Diane Hess, and a sister, Marjorie Doetsch. He was the widower of Norma Leschorn Hess.

He is survived by his wife, Verna Simon Hess, at home; a daughter, Emily Hess of Glen Gardner, NJ; four sons, George, William, Dale, and Timothy, all of Callicoon; a brother, Lloyd of Pluckemin, NJ; four grandchildren, Lucas, Louis, Jacob and Emma Hess; a sister-in-law, Lucille Simon of Cochecton; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held at the Hortonville Cemetery with Mr. Russell Lail officiating.

REV. GAIL B. WINTERMUTE

HAWLEY, PA — Rev. Gail B. Wintermute, a 34-year resident of Hawley, died on Saturday, November 13, 2004. He was 88.

The son of the late Florence Benner and Russell Wintermute, he was born in East Mauch Chuck.

He was a graduate of Dickinson College and Drew Seminary and a Methodist minister for the United Methodist Church. He retired in 1980. Prior to being assigned to the Hawley, Lakeville and Paupack Charge in 1970, he served in Scranton, Springville and Bird-in Hand Churches. He was a Methodist Church pastor for 59 years. He was a member of the Wyoming Conference of the United Methodist Church and he attended the Beach Lake United Methodist Church following his retirement. He was also a member of the Hawley Senior Citizens Group and a former Hawley Rotary Club member.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mildred L. Wintermute of Hawley; his daughter Louise Georgette of Sedona AZ; his son, Gail B. Wintermute, Jr. of Scranton; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at the Beach Lake United Methodist Church on Tuesday, November 30 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Gordon E. Weightman, pastor, officiating.

Internment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Pen Argyl.
