From half a world away

ELDRED, NY—“It was always my dream to come to America,” says 16-year-old Oyuna Myagmar, an exchange student from Ulaan Baatar, the capital of Mongolia.

She traveled thousands of miles this past summer with 17-year-old Suvd Gambold, another exchange student, and the pair came to stay for a year at the home of Carol and Robert Bliefernich of Eldred.

Robert teaches business and computer applications at the high school and serves as adviser for the National Honor Society. The Bliefernichs have led youth groups from Sullivan and Orange counties abroad as part of their involvement with the Student Ambassador Program.

Isabelle’s house

Last night I was watching the Travel Channel, hoping to catch a glimpse of the newest tropical hot spots. The feature was on haunting and supernatural occurrences. Paranormal scientists went from location to location with their gadgets and gizmos to measure electromagnetic deviations. Although inconclusive at best, I knew of a home that would make their little meters scream.

Be involved before it’s too late

My vision is of concerned residents involved in discussing and implementing ideas to help manage the growth that is coming our way. The U.S. Census predicts that the population of Pike County will be close to 80,000 by 2020; our current population is around 52,000. Where will these 30,000 people live, and how will our quality of life be sustained with this influx of growth?
