NICK ELLIS

BETHEL, NY — Nick Ellis, a 35-year resident of the area, died on Tuesday, October 12, 2004. He was 85.

The son of the late Julia Chilipka Ellis and Nicholas Ellis, he was born May 10, 1919 in Scranton PA.

He was in the Merchant Marines for 45 years before retiring.

He is survived by one sister, Anne Ellis of Jeffersonville, and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Joseph, Stephen and Andrew, and three sisters, Agnes Grivna, May Ellis and Helen Corriere.

There will be no service.


FRIDA E. (SCHRADER) GEFFKEN

HAWLEY, PA — Frida E. (Schrader) Geffken, a resident of Fawn Lake Forest in Hawley and a former resident of Flushing, NY, died at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale on October 18, 2004. She was 95.

The daughter of the late Alma and Frederich Schrader, she was born in Bremenhafen, Germany on February 27, 1909.

A housewife and a Lutheran, she was the wife of the late Albert Geffken.

She is survived by her daughter, Rita Junemann of Hawley; her brother, Willi Schrader of Germany; four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

No public services are planned.


DOROTHY MURPHY

HONEY BROOK, PA — Dorothy Murphy, a former resident of Hawley, PA and a resident of Honey Brook, died at Twin Oaks Nursing Home on Friday, October 8, 2004. She was 60.

The daughter of the late Monica Stoehr and Thomas Murphy, she was born in Union City, NJ.

She was a librarian and was Roman Catholic.

She is survived by her sisters Monica Perry of Annville, and Mary Ann Quanchi of Beach Lake; one niece and five nephews; two grandnieces and four grandnephews.

Funeral services were held at the Queen of Peace Cemetery on Saturday, October 23, with Rev. William G. Rushik, pastor of the Free Methodist Church in South Canaan, officiating. Interment will be at the Queen of Peace Cemetery in Hawley.

Memorial contributions can be made to Alcoholics Anonymous or Al-Anon.


IRENE IDA MARIE STAUBES

LIGHTHOUSE, FL — Irene Ida Marie Staubes, a former resident of Highland Lake, NY and a resident of Lighthouse, died in Lakehouse Point, FL on September 17, 2004. She was 81.

An only child, she was the daughter of Alfons and Johanna Theuer. The family emigrated from Germany to escape the Hitler regime in 1926.

She worked for her parents who owned and operated the Sunset House and the Sunset Bar in Highland Lake. She was married to Harry Arthur Staubes, who graduated from Eldred Central School in 1932. She owned and operated the Eldred Nik-Nac, was a licensed real estate agent, worked at the Trout Farm, Kohlmar and Grossinger’s. She played the accordion at the German Club and enjoyed being around lots of people.

She is survived by her daughters, Jeanie Balch Turner of Port Jervis NY, Linda Jo Oresto of Land O’Lakes, FL and Eldred, NY, and her son, Eric Arthur Alfons Staubes of San Diego, CA; 7 beautiful grandchildren and 4 adorable great-grandchildren.


JOYCE ANN WHALEN

BARRYVILLE, NY — Mrs. Joyce Anne Whalen, a resident of Barryville, died with her family by her side in her home on Saturday, October 23. She was 61.

The daughter of the late Frank and Ann Joel Waletitsch, she was born in Queens, NY on January 7, 1943.

She worked for several years as a teachers aid in the Eldred Central School district and was a member of St. Anthony’s R.C. Church in Yulan. A past president for the Yulan Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, she was also a board member of the Highland Seniors and a member of the Red Hat Club.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Frederick Whalen, at home; her son, Brian Whalen and his wife Marlene of Pine Bush; her daughter, Cheryl Ann Avits and her husband Steve of Owosso, MI; her brother, Frank Bischoff and his wife Irene of Long Island, NY; four grandchildren, Jimmy, Michael, David, and Katrina; nieces Kimberly and Kristy; and the family cat “Jasper.”

There will be no visitation.

Funeral services were held on October 26 in St. Anthony’s Church of Padua in Yulan, with Father Anthony Moore officiating.

Burial will be at Montoza Cemetery in Eldred.
