Conservancy celebrates river life come heck or high water

NARROWSBURG, NY — When weather this past weekend threatened the eighth annual Meadow Party, the Delaware Highlands Conservatory (DHC) refused to allow their celebration to be washed out.

The annual party, scheduled for Saturday, September 18 on the meadow shores of the Upper Delaware River, was held instead the following day at the Narrowsburg school parking lot when flooding submerged the shores.

Sue Currier of the DHC said the Meadow Party is “a celebration of life in the Upper Delaware.” And despite inclement conditions the previous day, the celebration brought together strangers and neighbors, proving that life in the Upper Delaware is good, even when times are hard.

The free event sponsored by the Wayne County Community Foundation featured crafts for kids, including bluebird nesting boxes and puppet shows, and environmental displays presented by local organizations.

“The food was fantastic,” said Sue Currier when asked about her favorite part of the celebration. The large buffet was made up of donations from 40 local businesses, and proceeds will support the DHC. Participants were encouraged to vote for their favorite food, and awards will be presented at a later date.
