Chiropractor weds during evacuation

By DAVID HULSE

In the midst of preparations to evacuate Barryville during Saturday afternoon’s flooding, firefighter Tony LaRuffa stopped long enough to put on his town justice robes and officiate at the wedding of Dr. Sharon Hamilton Hagemann and chiropractor Dr. Jay Kaufman.

The justice wore his rubber turn-out boots and apologized for them.

The bride changed in the adjoining constables’ office.

The Maid of Honor, Mary Kate Farrell, was the last one across the Barryville-Shohola Bridge before authorities closed it.

LaRuffa said that as he pronounced them husband and wife, the lights went out in a power outage at the town court. “I don’t know if that was a good omen or a bad one,” he said.

The couple, according to a statement, was determined to marry on September 18, as the date historically is the anniversary of the first-ever chiropractic adjustment.
