Crop Walk aims to help endhunger locally and globally

BY SUSAN M. BUZZELL

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, NY — The First Annual Sullivan County Crop Walk will be held on Sunday, October 3, rain or shine, at 2:00 p.m., with registration at 1:30 p.m. The two- to five-mile walk will begin and end at the White Sulphur Springs Fireman’s Park on Shore Road.

Organized locally, the Crop Walk has set a goal of 200 walkers and hopes to raise $20,000 to help stop hunger here in our community and around the world, through self-help development initiatives. Twenty five percent of the funds raised in Sullivan County will go to the Federation for the Homeless and Sullivan County Meals on Wheels.

This is the first Crop Walk to be held in Sullivan County in approximately 20 years. The last one was held in Monticello and raised about $1,500.

The Crop Walk is one of some 2,000 interfaith, community crop walks taking place around the country this year under the theme “You can make a difference.”

Africa is one part of the world where Crop Walks make a big difference – in helping people grow food for their families, in providing clean water to villages, in the struggle against the AIDS epidemic and in countless other ways. Crop Walks are also making a difference helping victims of Hurricane Charley, tornado victims in the mid-west, other natural disasters in the United States and numerous food pantries and hunger-fighting work throughout the U.S.
