ESTERITA “CISSIE” BLUMBERG

LIBERTY, NY — Esterita “Cissie” Blumberg died peacefully with her family at her side on Friday, September 3, 2004. She was 76.

Born and raised in the Catskill Mountains, Cissie was the daughter of the late Rose (Braverman) and Elmer Rosenberg. She graduated from Syracuse University (Phi Beta Kappa) and attended Columbia, majoring in English Education.

She served on the Board of Directors of the New Hope Community, the Sullivan County Community Service Board, was a Charter Member of the Sullivan County Mental Health Association, President of the Catskill Regional Medical Center - Auxiliary Division, and a member of the Sullivan County Community College Foundation Board, as well as Vice President of the Board of the Associated Mutual Insurance Company.

Cissie was the mother of Paul (and Noelle) of Pepper Pike, OH, and Amy (and Michael) Goldbas of Simsbury, CT, second mother of Kris Ohlson, grandmother of Matt, Jamie, Joanna, Jessie and Jake, sister of Robert (and Harriet) Rosenberg.

She was predeceased by her husband and best friend Larry Blumberg. They owned and operated Green Acres Hotel in Lake Huntington, NY and later Loch Sheldrake, NY.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, September 8, 2004 in the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home Inc., 388 Broadway, Monticello, NY. Burial will be in the Workman Circle Branch #281 Cemetery Glen Wild, NY.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 9 from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at her home, in Liberty.

GEORGE FEDGO

GREENTOWN, PA — George Fedgo died August 30, 2004, at his home in Greentown, PA. He was 72.

The son of the late Barbara Bulina and George Fedgo, he was born in Hazelton, PA.

He was an engineer for Kerfott Engineering in Clifton, NJ prior to retirement, and was a member of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Pocono Summit. He served in the U.S. army during the Korean War.

He is survived by a sister, Agnes Bradish, of Albrightsville, PA, and two nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be at St. Peter & St. Paul’s Cemetery in Freeland, PA.


STEFANIA KASHUBA

GLEN SPEY, NY — Stefania Kashuba of Glen Spey, a retired machine operator and 30-year resident of the area, died Tuesday, August 31, 2004 at St. Teresa’s Nursing Home in Middletown, NY. She was 81.

She was born January 18, 1923 in Ukraine, the daughter of the late Wasyl and Maria Radow Krun. She was the widow of the late Peter Kashuba; he died September 20, 1991.

She was a member of St. Volodymyr’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Glen Spey, the Ukrainian National Association and Glen Spey Senior Citizens.

Survivors include a brother, Wasyl Nakonechna of Ukraine; two nieces, Nadia Tanasiczuk of Brooklyn and Luba Nakonechna of Brooklyn; and grand nephew Oleh Nakonechna of Brooklyn.

Burial will be at Glen Spey Cemetery.

HARRY MCANANEY

CALLICOON, NY — Harry McAnaney died September 2, 2004 at his home in Callicoon, NY while being cared for by his family after fighting a long illness. He was 96.

He was the son of James McAnaney and Frieda Graepel, and was born at home in Brooklyn on July 18, 1918.

McAnaney is survived by his loving wife, Lillian Renton McAnaney at home; two daughters, Maureen Lamanno of Babylon and Karen Daly and her husband, Bill of Middletown; 14 grandchildren, Robyn Bassler and her husband, Dennis of Bayshore, NY; Richard Lamanno and his wife, Christine of Bayshore, NY; Karyn Talmadge and her husband George of Callicoon; Kellianne Freer and her husband, A.J. of Narrowsburg, NY; Kimberly Daly and her husband Shawn of Middletown; Kristi-Jo Radeboldt of Otisville; Richard Radeboldt, II of Cuddebackville; Tommy Radeboldt of Williamsburg, VA; Billy Daly, Jr. of Middletown; Danny Daly of Bloomingburg; Jody Daly and her fiance, Dean Ianazzi of Bloomingburg; and 12 great-grandchildren, Michael and Gabrielle Lamanno, Shane, Crystal and Brian Talmadge, Samantha, Brittney, Andrew and Matthew Freer, Brianna, Kayla and Tristan Radelboldt.

A funeral service of remembrance was celebrated on Sunday, September 5 at Seventh Day Adventist Church, 70 Highland Avenue, Middletown.


PETER MELNYK

GLEN SPEY, NY — Peter Melnyk of Glen Spey, a former restaurant owner in Newark, NJ and a longtime resident of this area, died Monday, August 30, 2004 at Bon Secours Community Hospital. He was 78.

He was born July 11, 1926 in Ukraine, the son of the late Andrew and Maria Gach Melnyk.

He was a member of St. Volodymyr’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Glen Spey and was a past president and member of the Lumberland Lions Club. He was also a former two-term Town of Lumberland councilman.

Earlier in life, he had taught English in Germany and was a producer and announcer in radio and television in New York City. Surviving are wife, Natalia Hunczak Melnyk at home; son, Peter T. Melnyk and his wife Marta of Long Valley, NJ; daughter Larysa Dyrszka and her husband Herbert of Haworth, NJ; five grandchildren, Johanna Natalia Dyrszka, Marc Dyrszka, Lars Dyrszka, Kristina Melnyk, Andrew Melsyk.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, September 1 at St. Volodymyr’s Ukrainian Catholic Church with the Rev. Mark Hirniak officiating.

Burial will be in Glen Spey Cemetery.


CLINTON “SONNY” MILLER

BEACH LAKE, PA — Clinton “Sonny” Miller of Beach Lake, PA, a retired heavy equipment operator and a lifelong resident of the area, died Wednesday, September 1, 2004 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, PA. He was 78.

The son of Bower and Helen Daisey Goetschivs Miller, he was born November 4, 1925 in Welcome Lake, PA. He was married to the late Jane Blackmore Miller who passed away in 1998.

Sonny was a veteran of the US Army, having served during World War II. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was also a member of the Honesdale VFW Post #531.

Survivors include three children, Shelley Corey and her husband Keith of Damascus, Richard of Beach Lake and Mary Thomas and her husband Les of Prompton; one daughter-in-law, Cathy Miller of Beach Lake; three sisters; Virginia Martin of White City, OR, Ella Zaffino of Moscow, PA and Phyllis Bouselli of Welcome Lake, PA; 10 grandchildren, six great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Walter Clinton Miller, by two brothers, Gordon and Calton and by two sisters, Gertrude Harrison and Bertha Smith.

Funeral services were at the Rasmussen Funeral Home in Narrowsburg, the Rev. Debbie Vandermark-Dailey officiating. Burial will be in Kimbles Cemetery in Hawley, PA.

DORIS M. STEVENS

NARROWSBURG, NY — Doris M. Stevens of Narrowsburg, NY, a seven-year resident of the area, died Tuesday, August 31, 2004 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, PA. She was 67.

The daughter of Arthur and Gertrude Sharpe Kunze, she was born March 6, 1937 in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY.

Mrs. Stevens was a graduate of the Parsons School of Design in New York City. After graduating, she was employed as a fashion illustrator in New York City and in Bermuda.

Survivors include her husband of over 40 years, Walter, as well as four nieces and nephews, Christian Kunze of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, Jeanette Kunze of Seattle, WA, Charles Kunze of San Diego, CA and Margaret Hynes of Issaquah, WA.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family at a date and time to be announced.

WILLIAM “VINCE” TANINIES, JR.

HONESDALE, PA — William “Vince” Taninies, Jr., 79, of Honesdale died peacefully Wednesday, September 1, 2004 at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born May 15, 1925 in Cold Springs to the late William and Mary Vercoski Taninies, Sr.

He was a well-known electrician who worked for Murray Co., W. F. Garing & Son and as a member of the IBEW Union and worked on many construction projects in New York. He taught many young people, including his sons, his many skills. He was also a successful farmer as a young man in Cold Springs and later when he and his wife purchased the Lau Farm in Laurella. He was an active member of St. John’s Parish and a weekly participant in the ministry of the Perpetual Eucharistic Chapel since its inception May 1, 1990 and the Block Party Electrician. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and a member of the Huff Pond Fishing Club.

Vince used his skills along with his brother-in-law Bernie Southerton to help friends and family to build homes. His generosity in volunteering his time and talents is unsurpassed. After retirement, he enjoyed being caretaker for the Robert & Patty Wigder estate in Laurella. He and his wife enjoyed many memorable four wheeler rides through the Widger & Taninies properties. He was a wonderful husband, farmer, “pop” and will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years the former Catherine Lau. Also surviving are his four children and their spouses Mrs. Robert (Kathleen) Spaulding, William. Taninies and wife Kathy, John Taninies and wife Jeanmarie all of Honesdale, and Mrs. Mike (Tessie) Murray of Welcome Lake and “the other kid” neighbor Ginny Davitt. He had thirteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews, a sister Fran Bishop and her husband Harold of Honesdale.

The funeral was held Saturday, September 4, 2004 at St. John the Evangelist Church in Honesdale. Interment followed at St. John’s Cemetery.
