Flash flooding devastates Westbrookville

WESTBROOKVILLE, NY—More than a week after floodwaters from the Pine Kill and Basha Kill converged on this Town of Mamakating hamlet, county officials were still awaiting the disaster declaration from Governor Pataki that would trigger state and federal emergency relief funding.

Sullivan County Emergency Management Coordinator Richard Martinkovic said the county filed its documentation with the State Emergency Management Office (SEMO) on Friday. “Now, it’s just a matter of waiting for the governor,” he said on Monday.

Mountain Laurel’s rebirth attracts 10,000

BUSHKILL, PA—“The Mountain Laurel Center is open,” said Richard T. Bryant Friday night at the start of the Labor Day Weekend Festival, three days of concerts that represented the re-founding of the Mountain Laurel Center for the Performing Arts.

As the center’s new CEO, Bryant has taken on the double-task of dealing with the center’s unfortunate past and founding a new arts institution.

“I’ll stay as long as it takes,” Bryant said in a phone interview.

Economic and environmental clash at mushroom hearing

WURTSBORO, NY—Despite its ponderous four-hour length, the lines of contention were evident as spokesmen for environment and cultural resource managers debated economic development proponents at the August 31 planning board hearing on the draft environmental impact statement for a planned Yukiguni Maitake mushroom growing facility.

More than 30 people testified for and against the project and no one was undecided about it.
