Benefit tourney a huge success

LAKE WALLENPAUPACK, PA — The Wallenpaupack Over 50 Baseball League hosted a benefit baseball tournament on Sunday, August 22. All proceeds will benefit the Tyler Tooley family of Matamoras.

Tyler underwent a liver transplant and is currently recovering in Pittsburgh, PA. The league raised over $1,400 in donations from area businesses, private corporations, players and others including the Gray family, who came all the way from Plymouth Meeting, PA, near Philadelphia.

They read about the tourney and sent a donation to help out the family. Non-perishable food items were also donated to help Tyler’s mother, who will be staying in Pittsburgh while Tyler recovers. The Over 50 league’s two teams, the Fogies and the Weezers, played against the Wilkes-Barre Over 50 softball team and a special team of players from the Pike County Probation Department. The Fogies didn’t hold up well against either challenge, losing both ball battles.

In game one, Pike Probation manhandled the Fogies with a final score of 10-4. In game two, the Fogies went downhill as The Wilkes-Barre team out-slugged the Fogies 11-7. The Weezers faired better in their game one against the Wilkes-Barre team, outscoring them 10-8. Game two didn’t come out as well with the youngsters of Pike Probation handing the Weezers their first losing game in many weeks by outrunning the old boys of summer 12-5.

The Wallenpaupack Over 50 baseball league meets every Sunday afternoon at the Wallenpaupack High School baseball diamond for a 2:00 game, weather permitting.
