Mother of two arrested for vanishing

NARROWSBURG, NY — Narrowsburg resident Kristen Scialampo, 45, vanished from her children’s lives last week.

According to Sullivan County Sheriff Daniel Hogue, Scialampo left her job in Narrowsburg on Tuesday, July 27 around noon with her paycheck in hand.

She didn’t come back until late last week, after police arrested her early Thursday, July 29, in Monticello and charged her with endangering the welfare of her children.

When she was arrested, “she thought it was a joke,” said Don Starner, the lead detective on the case.

Scialampo told her friend Stephen Glowatz that she was leaving to see some friends in Monticello and that her 16-year-old son would be babysitting her two-year-old daughter.

But when Scialampo failed to show up at home for almost 24 hours, her son confided in a local church leader, pastor Peg VanSiclen, who then called the police mid-morning on Wednesday, July 28. State police were notified and a search commenced.

“You never know. It would be uncommon for her to show up at home. We decided to go out in full force,” Hogue said.

A delivery man who had seen the missing woman’s photo saw Scialampo leave a house near Park Avenue in Monticello and get into a car on Thursday between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m. He notified police, and the sheriff’s department, assisted by the Monticello Police, pulled her over, Hogue said. There were two other people in her vehicle.

“It’s an area known for high drug activity,” Hogue said.

Starner said Scialampo was not tested for drugs for lack of probable cause. After posting $1,500 bail, she was released.
