Rohman Park is ready for play
By DAVID HULSE
SHOHOLA, PA Generations of Shohola children will be making use of the new Rohman Park and baseball field, which was dedicated last Saturday.
More than 50 people turned out for noontime ceremonies at the park, located just off Route 434 on Twin Lakes Road.
Anna Rohman donated the land, a portion of the old Shohola Glen amusement park, to the township in 1998 in memory of her late husband Nicholas, and his uncle, Shoholas legendary tavern keeper Arthur Rohman.
Mrs. Rohman was on hand to unveil a plaque commemorating the event.
Since 1998 a combination of community fundraising and grant approvals has developed the property. A $54,000 Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources grant saw to grading of land and creation of the field and parking area, Supervisor George J. Fluhr said.
Next year, an additional $125,000 in federal community block grant funding will provide for playground equipment, security fencing, restrooms and ball field bleachers, he said.
Eighty-five year-old Bob Wood drove down from Keene, New Hampshire to throw out the first ball on the field. Wood, a Shohola native, is the son of one the townships most renowned citizens, the late Smokey Joe Wood, who many people believe should be a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Wood was a star pitcher for the Boston Red Sox and a teammate of Babe Ruth.
