A call to stewardship

There have been recent exhaustive discussions, studies and policy refinements to address the overabundance of White Tailed Deer throughout this region. A rampant deer population makes forest regeneration difficult, costs lives and money through deer/vehicle accidents, is a gardener and landscaper’s nightmare, spreads Lyme Disease and eliminates populations of breeding songbirds as they are left with no forest shrub layer in which to nest.

But, do we not impact our habitat to a much greater extent?

Ollie and organize: Team Skate plans a park

LIBERTY, NY—It’s one thing to complain about a perceived lack of available activities for kids; it’s another thing to do something about it.

Seventeen-year-old Jamie Barbehenn of Liberty admits to having uttered the oft-heard mantra of Sullivan County youth: “There’s nothing here for kids to do.”

But Barbehenn was not content with the status quo of ennui, nor was he interested in becoming just another disaffected slacker. Consequently he took up skateboarding, a sport he spends hours a day working on.
