Chapel Field wins second ‘D’ softball title in a row

CLIFTON PARK, NY – Chapel Field’s Julie Schaper pitched her team to state championship victory for the second consecutive year as the Lions defeated Section Three’s Hamilton by the score of 1-0.

After squeaking by Section Two’s Fort Ann (3-2), Chapel Field scored after Lara Kuperus walked. She was sacrificed to second by Megan Klussman. She scored on a bloop single by Jenna Vellenga. The one run was all Schaper needed.

Schaper also made a state finals appearance as a freshman. Chapel Field finished its season at 21-1.

Other Section Nine teams were not so fortunate.

Class C Chester lost in the quarterfinals to Section Eight’s Oyster Bay. The title was won by Sandy Creek (Section Three); class B Highland lost in the opening round to eventual state champ Windsor (Section Four); class A Cornwall lost in the quarterfinals to Susquehanna Valley (Section Four); and class AA Valley Central Lost in the quarterfinals to John Jay Fishkill.

S.S. Seward’s errors cost Spartans Class D baseball title

BINGHAMTON, NY – You don’t win a title when you make six errors in the most important game of the year. The S.S. Seward Spartans lost to Section Five’s Northstar by the score of 10-7. Seward blew leads of 5-1, 6-3 and 7-6 as nerves got the better of them. Seward ended their season at 19-7.

Other Section Nine teams didn’t get as far.

In class C, Tuxedo lost in the quarterfinals to Friends Academy (Section Eight); class B John S. Burke lost in the first round to eventual state champion Windsor (Section Four); class A Rondout Valley lost to Maine Endwell (Section Four); and class AA Kingston succumbed to Union Endicott (Section Four) in the opening round.
