Club caps off a great season

By RICHARD A. ROSS

MONTICELLO, NY – The Monticello Gymnastics Club wraps up its successful 2003-2004 season with two annual events. On June 1, the gymnasts and their parents along with team coaches Pedro Tweed, Rich Parks, Amanda Tweed and Maria Karkos staged the annual picnic at DeHoyos Park. With food galore and the usual water gun fight ensuing among the gymnasts, all enjoyed the slightly chilly late afternoon festivities.

Tweed recognized each and every gymnast from the youngest pre-team members to the two elder statesmen of the team, Jonathan Ross and Kienan Garn. Each gymnast received a trophy with his or her name engraved on it along with words of praise from Tweed, who has devoted decades to the program that has helped so many children over the years, not only to become better gymnasts, but also in developing discipline and self-esteem.

The gymnastics summer program, held at the Monticello Gymnastics facility on Bedford Avenue, will run from July 6 to August 12 and is open to all children interested in movement. Tuition costs $400 for the entire summer or $75 per week, except for the first and last weeks, which cost $60. Parents may elect to sign their kids up on a per diem basis at the cost of $15. Applications are available at the Village Office in Monticello. For more information call Betsy Conaty at 845/794-2351.

Annual expo

The Monticello Gymnastics Club will hold its annual exhibition at Monticello high school on Friday, June 11 at 6:30 pm. Gymnasts should arrive at 6:00 pm. All of the children who participated in either the classes or competed on the team will be on hand to demonstrate their skills. The exhibition serves as a fundraiser for the club, which uses the proceeds to purchase needed equipment for the program.
