Photography at the Blue Victorian

JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — The Gallery at The Blue Victorian will hold an artists reception on Saturday, May 8 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. for “Photographs by Myrna Charry and LaVerne Black.” The show will run from May 6 through June 13.

Charry’s photographs are in the surreal tradition. She tries to reveal what lies beneath a smile or frown. “There is a great truth in the nude body—it cannot hide, it cannot tell tales, nor can it be anything but itself. It is honest and it is supremely beautiful,” she said.

Charry was born and educated in New York City, received a professional degree in photography and taught in New York, Florida and London. Her work has appeared in more than 19 solo exhibitions, many juried shows, in newspapers and on book covers.

Black was born on a family farm in Sullivan County. Her photographs reflect her love for the rural landscape and country life. She records the structures of an agrarian society and presents to the viewer a romantic image of the past. Her images are sensitive, peaceful, and at times poignantly somber.

Black recently exhibited with a group of Sullivan County artists in a show called “The New Catskills” at the Amos Eno Gallery of Chelsea in Manhattan.

The Blue Victorian is located at 4874 Main Street. The shop and gallery hours are Thursday through Monday from 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. For more information call Greg Brooks at 845/482-5544.
