Eldred, Tri-Valley eye division titles
By RICHARD A. ROSS
JEFFERSONVILLE, NY Eldreds coach Frank Schorling wasnt a happy camper as he got out of his car to join his team for a non-league meet against Sullivan West.
ELDRED 75 SULLIVAN WEST 66 |
True, division rival Livingston Manor (0-3) was going to be there, but the Yellowjackets had just beaten them and Monticello the day before. Two days later, Eldred would have to be in Grahamsville for the Tri-Valley relays, and Schorling felt like the schedule was a bit much.
Other schools could voice the same complaint, but track is a compact season and everyone is running at full tilt. Eldred has little to complain about. After all, with a win over Chapel Field this week, the Yellowjackets will have completed an undefeated league season.
Eldreds track standouts, including Catlin Sardina (high jump), Tim Hallock (shot put and discus), Kyle Anthony (triple jump, long jump and 4x400) and Tyler Laput (110-meter hurdles, 400-meter hurdles), were all winners racking up points for the Yellowjackets (5-0).
Kyle Anthony took over as Sullivan Countys top long-jumper with a leap of 19-5. He bested Bulldog Scott Peters (18-7¼) and former leader Patrick Branning of Livingston Manor, who had beaten Anthony at the Tri-Valley Invitational on April 24. Anthonys 42-11 triple jump is still well below his indoor leap of 44-8½, which put him at the top of Section Nine and qualified him for the nationals at the Armory. A pulled hamstring shorted out that appearance, but the spry jumper claims its getting much better. If hes right, look out. This kid can fly.
For their part, the Bulldogs (2-2) were paced by Mike VanWagenen (1600, 3200, 4x800), Scott Peters (100 and 200), and John Kitson (pole vault). According to Bulldogs coach Ron Bauer, the team was missing some key participants, but he chose not to elaborate.
Yellowjackets knock off Panthers and Wildcats
MONTICELLO, NY Making a habit of beating large and small schools alike, the Yellowjackets outscored the Monticello Panthers by more than a two-to-one margin in their April 28 meet, while simultaneously hammering Division VI rival Livingston Manor, which is sorely undermanned this year. The jackets beat Manor 114-23.
Eldreds 3200-relay team of Mark Thornton, Charles Chandler, Catlin Sardina and Max Gunther got the Yellowjackets started with a 10:55.3 win. Kyle Steimle won the 110-hurdles and the 400-intermediate hurdles, Kieran Pierce took the 1600, and Kyle Anthony won the 400, the long jump and the triple jump. Tim Hallock won both the shot put (44-4) and the discus (129-4). Chandler took the 3200 (14:04).
Tri-Valley outguns Liberty
LIBERTY, NY Adam Wilson of Tri-Valley is improving at every meet. The standout hurdler won his events against the Indians, beginning with a 15.1 in the 110 hurdles. He came back later to win the 400 hurdles in 62.7 and the 400 in 53.5. Other Tri-Valley winners included Travis Wolfe in the 1000 (4:49.6), the 800 (2:11.3) and the 3200 (11:57). Abram Leon won the triple jump (34-1), Andy Garigliano took the shot put (40-7) and Alan Coombe won the discus (105-2).
Libertys winners included Peter Talerico in the 100 (12.4) and the 200 (25.2). Chris Goldsmith won the long jump (16-3) and the high jump (5-6). Jacob Schwartz took the pole vault (10-0).
Sullivan West finishes eleventh in Division I, Tri-Valley is second and Eldred third in Division II at Tri-Valley
GRAHAMSVILLE, NY A late meet and a somewhat diminished field were the effects of the S.A.T. exams that were administered May 1. Warwick, Middletown and Cornwall were among the powerful teams missing in action. Sullivan West took eleventh place out of 14 teams in Division I. Tri-Valley finished second in Division II with 46 points to Millbrook which racked up 55. Eldred came in third with 34.5 points.
Walkill won the Division I title with 122.5 points. Individuals played a back seat to team efforts as team members scores were added together in events for the purpose of the relays. Some local individual first places included Travis Wolfe (T-V), who won the 2000 steeplechase (6:46.8). And the Bears took the 1200 hurdle relay with Adam Wilson, Max Fiedler and Sanders (3:13).
