FRED ALBERS

WAYMART, PA — Fred Albers of Milanville and a 34-year resident of the area, died April 18, 2004 at Wayne Woodlands Manor, Waymart, PA. He was 96.

Born April 27, 1908 in Brauel, a small village in northern Germany, he immigrated to the United States in 1928 and became a US citizen soon thereafter. He also met Anna Katherine Steffens, whom he had known as a child because they lived in neighboring towns and attended the same church in Germany, and they married and settled in Ridgefield, NJ where they lived for over 30 years. In Ridgefield, he operated a mason contracting business and was active in church and civic affairs, including six years of service on the board of education.

He retired from his business in 1970 and the couple built a new home in Milanville where they again became active in church and civic affairs. He served with the Damascus Township Volunteer Ambulance Corps and is noted for his founding membership in the Damascus Township Planning Commission where he was instrumental in establishing the township’s first master plan.

His wife of 67 years, Anna Steffens Albers, died in October 2003.

Survivors include a son Ray and his wife Susan of Vienna, VA, with grandsons Andrew and his wife Carmen, and Ben and his wife Sarah Butzen and great-grandson Gabriel; son John and his wife Judy of Evergreen, CO with granddaughter Katie and grandson Greg and his wife Kate Palmer Albers.

Friends are invited to call on Sunday, April 25 at Rasmussen Funeral Home, Narrowsburg, NY from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Milanville Cemetery, Milanville, PA.

GLADYS E. (WEITZ) HANF

HONESDALE, PA — Gladys E. (Weitz) Hanf, a 60-year resident of Hawley and a former resident of Middletown, NY, died April 18, 2004 at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale, PA. She was 87.

The daughter of the late John Weitz and Elizabeth Paffenroth Weitz, she was born in Pine Island, NY.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hawley. She also was a member of St. Paul’s Willing Workers and a former member of Rebecca’s Lodge in Hawley.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Paul O. Hanf, at home; two sons, John V. of Honesdale, PA and Richard B. of Marietta, OH; two daughters, Elizabeth Smith of Tyler Hill, PA and Vera Jean Byng of Snohomish, WA; stepson Robert of Hawley, PA; eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held on April 21 at Teeters’ East Chapel, Inc., Hawley, PA. Funeral services will be held at the chapel on Thursday, April 22 at 10:00 a.m., the Rev. David Heckler Pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church officiating.

MARIA KUZMENKO

POND EDDY, NY — Maria Kuzmenko, a 20-year resident of the area, died April 14, 2004 at home. She was 85.

She was born July 10, 1918 in Ukraine.

She was the widow of the late Konstantin Kuzmenko who died March 25, 1998.

She was a member of St. Volodymyr’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, Glen Spey, NY.

Survivors include a son, Bohdan Gojnycz and his wife Maria of Rockaway, NJ; three grandsons, Konstantin Gojnycz and his wife, Deanne of Washington, DC, Andrew Gojnyez of Rockaway, NJ and Borys Gojnycz of Duxbury, MA; and great-granddaughter Brianna Gojnycz.

Friends called and the Panachyda service was held on April 18 at Gray-Parker Funeral Home, Port Jervis.

Funeral services were held April 19 with a Liturgy Mass in St. Volodymyr’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, the Rev. Mark Hirniak officiating.

Interment was in Glen Spey Cemetery, Glen Spey, NY.

JUDITH ANN LEONARD

SHOHOLA, PA — Judith Ann Leonard died April 13, 2004 at home. She was 67.

The daughter of the late Frank and Katherine Krazinski Lungaro, she was born October 29, 1936 in Middletown, CT. She was married to the late Joseph B. Leonard.

She was a member of St. Ann’s Church, Shohola, PA.

Survivors include her daughter, Frances Hlavacek and her husband Glen of Shohola, PA; two brothers, Michael Lungaro of Boynton Beach, FL and Francis Lungaro of Montclair, NJ; her sister, Virginia Baker of Winter Park, FL; and her grandson, Joseph Hlavacek.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on April 15 at St. Ann’s Church, the Rev. Thomas Petro officiating.

Interment was in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Shohola, PA.

“BUD” HENRY A. UMNIK

COCHECTON, NY — “Bud” Henry A. Umnik of Cochecton Center, a lifetime resident of the area, died April 13, 2004 at home after a long battle with cancer. He was 59.

The son of Henry and Ethel Heinle Umnik, he was born April 3, 1945 in Callicoon, NY. He was married to Sharon Dunn.

He was a master electrician, having taken over his father’s plumbing, heating and electrical contracting business which began in the 1940s.

He was a 1963 graduate of Narrowsburg Central Rural School. He was a 1965 graduate with an associate degree from Williamsport Area Community College. He was a former member of the US Army Reserves, a founding and former member of the Cochecton Ambulance, a member of Heinle’s Generals softball team, a member of the Cochecton Center Community Center and a trustee of Laurel Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife Sharon, at home; one sister, Elizabeth Farrell of Stafford, VA; one brother, Howard and his wife Suzanne of Cochecton Center; and one niece, Elizabeth M. of Landsville, PA as well as many cousins.

Friends called on April 16 and 17 at Cochecton Center Community Center, Cochecton Center, NY.

Funeral services were held on April 17 at the Cochecton Center Community Center, the Rev. Thomas Jones officiating.

Interment was in Laurel Cemetery, Cochecton Center, NY.

CHARLES L. WILCOX

HONESDALE, PA — Charles L. Wilcox, a Damascus resident and a lifelong resident of the area, died April 14, 2004 at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale, PA. He was 81.

The son of the late Edward and Frances Casey Wilcox, he was born May 6, 1922 in Lookout, PA.

He was a retired driver for PennDot and a veteran of the US Army having served during World War II. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion as well as the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include two brothers, Walter and his wife Yvonne, and Harold, as well as several nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Harvey and a sister, Hazel Reynolds and by his longtime companion, Mabel Wood.

Friends called on April 18 at Rasmussen Funeral Home, Narrowsburg, NY.

Funeral services were held on April 19 at the funeral home, the Rev. George Gallandorn officiating.

Interment was in Hillcrest Cemetery, Galilee, PA.
