Legislature begins jail construction discussion

Early cost estimates $25 to $70 million

MONTICELLO, NY—Sullivan County has yet to see a dime from gaming, but one of gaming’s predicted costs came home to roost last week.

Following a January 8 discussion before the Public Works Committee, members of the Sullivan County Legislature agreed to form a sub-committee last week to begin talking about the specifics of planning and building a new jail facility.

“We cannot continue with ours; it’s over-capacity,” said committee chair Kathy LaBuda.

Sheriff Dan Hogue agreed. “We’ve got more people coming here.”
