Car strikes and kills escaped horse
By TOM KANE
NARROWSBURG, NY — A horse that broke away from a corral
looking for fresh grass jumped through an electric barrier strip and was struck
by a car on County Road 23 in the Town of Tusten. The accident occurred around
3:00 p.m. on November 6.
The car, driven by Thomas Gibbons of Narrowsburg, struck the
horse while traveling north towards Route 97.
“Actually, there were two horses on the road so I had double
trouble trying to avoid them,” Gibbons said. “One of them I just couldn’t
avoid.”
The horse’s head crashed through the window and struck
Gibbon’s wife, Suzanne, who was a front-seat passenger. The Gibbons’ two
children, aged two and four, were in the rear seat in car seats.
“Glass was all over me and some imbedded in my skin,”
Suzanne said. “Thank God the children weren’t hurt, although broken glass was
all over them and their car seats.”
Suzanne was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale,
PA, where she was treated for minor contusions and released.
“The children were very disturbed by the accident especially
my younger one,” she said.
The Gibbons came into The River Reporter office this past
Tuesday to learn the names of some of the emergency staff that took care of
them.
“I am enormously grateful to the Narrowsburg Fire Company
and the Tusten Ambulance people who were so kind and considerate, especially to
my children,” she said.
The 12-year-old horse, called Desiree, was owned by Andrea
Reynosa of Skydog Farm.
