Car wash gets okay
By DAVID HULSE
ELDRED, NY — Town of Highland planners on November 5 checked
off the remaining conditions that would authorize construction of a three-bay,
automated car wash at the corner of Mail Road and County Road 21.
The car wash uses a recycled water system that does not
produce a new wastewater stream.
Alan Hochhauser’s project returned to the town planning
board after it won a variance to allow a reduced side-yard setback from the
town’s zoning board of appeals. Given the late season date, Hochhauser said he
was uncertain as to when construction might begin.
He estimated his investment at approximately $200,000. “I
polled people all over town and they all said they wanted a car wash,” he said.
Planners last week approved conditions, including limiting
operating hours to 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.; reduced interior lighting in
non-operating hours, access solely from the county road, and landscaping.
The block building is to have a peaked roof with dormers.
