Eldred falls to S.S. Seward in Class D finals

NEWBURGH, NY — Top-seeded S.S. Seward (18-1) brought intensity and few surprises to the Section 9, Class D finals. Gunning for their third straight Class D title, the Lady Spartans relied on top gun Theresa Space who answered the call with a hat trick against the scrappy Eldred Yellowjackets (8-10). Eldred played hard but was overmatched by the Lady Spartans.

Space got her first goal at 21:17 of the first half on an assist from Katie Akrop. S.S. Seward led 1-0 at the half.

During the second half, Space got to the goal courtesy of an assist from Susan Tuthill at 32:14 and again at 20:53, giving S.S. Seward a 3-0 lead. Tricia Dugan had the final goal of the day.

Coach Porter was proud of her Yellowjackets and felt they played hard. Superintendent Ivan Katz expressed his pride in the Eldred team and had words of thanks and praise for the seniors. This was the last game for seniors Jenna Fredericks, Jenny Haas, Lauren Timan, Roberta Wolff, Brenda Ferry, Jené Shafer and Laura Butler.

Section 9 teams move on to first round state action

Girls’ action:

Class AA: Washingtonville(14-3-1) will face Section 1 champ North Rockland.

Class A New Paltz (13-5-1) faces Horace Greeley.

Class B Goshen John S. Burke Catholic (19-0-1) faces Albertus Magnus (16-2-2).

Class C Tuxedo (16-3) faces Rye Neck (5-11-1).

Class D S.S. Seward faces St. Johnsville (9-11-1) of the Albany area.

Boys’ action:

Class A Pine Bush (14-3-2) plays Section 4 champ Union Endicott (14-4-2).

Class B Goshen (15-5-1) plays Owego (17-3).

Class C Rhinebeck (15-3-1) plays Section 1 Keio (19-0).

Class D S.S. Seward (16-3) plays Section 1 Haldane (1-9-1).
