World-class opera around the corner
NARROWSBURG, NY — Dramatic soprano and voice teacher Dorothy
Stone Andrade will perform a program of classical and popular music with
pianist Ken Uy on Sunday, November 9 at 3:00 p.m. in the Gloria Krause Recital
Hall of the Delaware Arts Center, 37 Main Street.
Andrade, who lives part-time in Welcome Lake, PA, has
performed throughout the United States and Europe in opera, operetta, concert
and recital. She was the recipient of the Paris Opera AROP career grant, and
she coached the operatic repertoire with legendary soprano Regine Crespin in
Paris. She has sung in Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Hall as the American representative
of the International Tchaikovsky Competition, in the festival Le Nuits
Romantiques in Aix-les-Bains, France, and for the late French President
Francois Mitterand as part of D-Day 50th anniversary concerts along the coast
of Normandy.
Andrade’s repertoire is testament to her versatility. It
includes all leading Verdi soprano roles and extends to Handel oratorio, Wagner
and Puccini, song cycles from Strauss and Berlioz and Gilbert and Sullivan
operettas and Broadway musicals.
The Los Angeles Times wrote, “The interpretation of ‘Climb
Every Mountain’ by Dorothy Stone [Andrade] will send chills up your
spine…profoundly moving.”
Andrade teaches voice and performance at New York
University, and she is the founder and artistic director of the new Campo Doro
Vocal Institute of the Upper Delaware Valley.
Uy moved to Sullivan County in 1984 after a career as a
musical director and pianist in New York City. In 1988 and 1989, he played for
Delaware Valley Opera productions and served on its board of directors. In
2000, he became involved with music in the Sullivan West school district,
highlighted by a student production of “Cinderella” in 2002.
Admission costs $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors.
