Canfield named interim supervisor
By TOM KANE
DAMASCUS, PA — Jennifer Canfield, a former member of the
Damascus Planning Commission, was named interim supervisor, filling the
unexpired term of Larry Newport who resigned from the Damascus township board
last month.
Canfield, the owner of Calbert Real Estate Agency, will
serve until December 31, 2003.
Newport, who is running for re-election as a Republican this
November, did not announce his resignation until after thae deadline was passed
for names to be removed from the ballot. Therefore, his name will appear.
If he is re-elected, the township board would have to name
someone to fill the position, according to Darlene Burnett, director of the
Wayne County Bureau of Elections.
The Democratic candidate for the position of supervisor is
Fred Haase.
In other board matters, the board rejected the Tyler Hill
Farm Country Inn’s application for a liquor license. Since the two-member board
was split on the vote, the application was automatically rejected, according to
board chairman William Gager.
Canfield was not yet in the position of supervisor and
therefore was not available to vote.
“The applicant has the right to take the matter to the Wayne
County Common Pleas Court,” Gager said.
A letter was read from Pastor Stewart Hunt of the First
Baptist Church, which stated his opposition and several other pastors from
neighboring churches to the granting of the liquor license. The letter stated
that the combined congregations of the churches number around 900 people who,
the letter said, would oppose the re-election of any official that voted to
grant the license request.
Steve Nonnenmacher, owner of the inn, said he would consider
taking the matter to court and would decide, depending on the projected costs
of litigation.
