ANNA STEFFENS ALBERS
MILANVILLE, PA — Anna Steffens Albers died
on October 9, 2003 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. She
was 95.
She was born in Hesslingen, Germany and lived in
Milanville for 32 years.
Anna is survived by her sons, Ray and John, two
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was an avid gardener, accomplished cook, homemaker
and community volunteer. She was active in Saint John’s Lutheran
Church in Honesdale, the United Methodist Women of Milanville, and
Beach Lake Methodist Church. She also served in the Pink Lady Auxiliary
at Callicoon Hospital.

PHYLLIS M. BAIM
Narrowsburg, NY — Phyllis M. Baim, a retired
teacher, died on October 19, 2003 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in
Honesdale, PA. She was 88.
The daughter of Miah H. and Melinda Stackhouse Vannatta,
she was born in Neweiden, NY.
She taught for 45 years and was a member of the
United Methodist Church of Narrowsburg, the Sullivan County Retired
Teachers Association, Alpha Delta Kappa and the Lava Fired Department
Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, Cameron, at home;
a son, Kenneth of Narrowsburg; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, October
23, at 2:00 p.m. at Rasmussen Sons Funeral Home in Narrowsburg.

THOMAS BRENNAN
ELDRED, NY – Thomas Brennan died on October
16, 2003 at Belle Reve, Milford, PA. He was 85.
The son of the late William and Loretta Walsha Brennan,
he was born in Newark, NJ.
He was an Army veteran of WWII, a member of the
Eldred VFW Post No. 6427 and had been active in the Michael A. Kelly
VFW Post of Union, NJ. He volunteered as a driver for the Eldred
American Legion Ambulance Service and was active in establishing
the Highland Senior Center.
He is survived by his wife, Minnie “Mae”
Stephan Brennan; a daughter, Jane Ann Koeck of Lake Kitatinny, NJ;
a stepson, Charles J. Brauner, of Canada; a step-daughter, Doris
Keeling of White Lake; eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
His family received friends at the Gray-Rasmussen
Funeral Home on October 21 and funeral services were held on October
22.

DOROTHY L. BROWN
CHARLOTTE, NC — Dorothy L. Brown died on October
4, 2003 in Charlotte, NC.
The daughter of the late Henry J. and Veronica E.
Gilbert, she was born in Auburn, NY.
She was a homemaker and a 27-year resident of Eldred.
She is survived by a son, John A. Brown; three daughters,
Joanne E. Brown, Jeanne M. Messer and Joyce A. Brown; 10 grandchildren
and seven great grandchildren.
Cremation services were held in Charlotte. A committal
service will be held in Port Bryon in the near future.

ALLEN RICHARD COLEMAN
COCHECTON CENTER, NY — Allen Richard Coleman
died on October 19, 2003 at his daughter’s home in New Windsor.
He was 69.
Son of the late Eugene P. and Mabel Tompkins Coleman,
he was born in Newburgh, NY.
Allen served in the US Air Force. He retired from
IBEW Local 363 and spent his retirement years with his companion,
Sally Helmrich of Newburgh. He was an avid hunter and fisherman
who enjoyed traveling to Canada for large game hunting and fishing
expeditions.
He is survived by his children, Mary Beth Ludlow
of Carboro, NC, Judy Leroy of Newburgh, Gemma Dietrich of Groton,
MA, Allen P. Coleman of Newburgh and five grandchildren.
The family will receive their friends at the Brooks-DiDonato
Funeral Home in Newburgh on October 25. A memorial service will
be held on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. following the visitation. Interment
will follow in Goshen Veteran’s Cemetery, Goshen.

RICHARD A. COLLINS
MILANVILLE, PA – Richard A. Collins died on
October 10, 2003 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. He was
82.
The son of Raymond and Estelle Noble Collins, he
was born in Carbondale.
A US Army veteran of WWII, he worked as a mechanic
for Roche Garage in Calicoon, NY for 40 years and was a member of
the Boyds Mills Hunting Club.
He is survived by his wife, the former Louise Anna
Koferl; two daughters, Estella Olson and Susannah Austin, both of
Milanville; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Cremation will take place at Twin Tiers Crematory,
Endicott, NY. Funeral services will be at the family’s convenience.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Damascus
Volunteer Ambulance Corps or the Beach Lake Fire Department.
JULIA J. KEARNEY
MONTICELLO, NY — Julia J. Kearney died on
October 13, 2003 at her home. She was 89.
The daughter of the late William and Carrie Barlow
Murns, she was born in Pond Eddy, NY.
Julia was a homemaker and lifelong resident of the
area. She attended St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Monticello,
was a member of the Bailey-Richman VFW Post 5499 Ladies Auxiliary
in Monticello and the Monticello Senior Citizens.
She is survived by four sons, William of Monticello,
Richard of Glen Spey, Henry of Tampa, FL and John of Lakeland, FL;
one daughter, Bridget Maher of Lakeland, FL; 27 grandchildren, and
56 great grandchildren.
Services were held at Saint Peter’s Cemetery
on October 15 in Monticello.

JOSEPHINE T. LAGODA
FOSTERDALE, NY – Josephine T. Lagoda died
on October 12, 2003 at her home.
The daughter of the late Frederick Otto and Josephine
Hauser Edelmann, she was born in 1925.
She was a homemaker and a lifetime area resident.
She is survived by one daughter, Bonnie Crum of
Cochecton, NY; three sons, William of Jeffersonville, NY, Barry
of Bethel, NY and Steven of Cochecton; three grandchildren and three
great grandchildren.
Interment took place at Fosterdale Cemetery.

JAMES R. LEAVENWORTH
Eldred, NY—James R. Leavenworth, a lifelong
resident of Eldred, died on October 19, 2003 at Bon Secours Community
Hospital in Port Jervis, NY. He was 81.
The son of James Garfield and Ella Sergeant Leavenworth,
he was born April 2, 1922.
He served four years with the US Army Air Force
during WWII at which time he met his wife Gisele in Paris, France.
He worked as a sawyer with Narrowsburg Lumber until starting his
own business as a homebuilder.
He is survived by his wife; one son, David of Eldred;
two daughters, Cynthis Bellinger of Springfield Center, NY and Nancy
Leo of Hillsborough, NJ; four grandchildren and several nieces and
nephews.

VIRGINIA MCDONNELL
NORTH FORT MYERS, FL – Virginia McDonnell
died on October 10, 2003 at Mercy Hospital, Scranton, PA. She was
77.
The daughter of the late James R. and Lottie Mahon
Danley, she was born in Matamoras, PA.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the
VFW Post in Port Jervis, NY.
She is survived by two sons, Allen of Bluegrass,
IA and Keith of Jermyn, PA; three brothers, Dean Danley of Blooming
Grove, PA, Robert Danley, of Stockton, CA and James Danley of Anaheim,
CA, and six grandchildren.
Graveside services were held on October 13 at Fairview
Memorial Park in Elmhurst.
BORIS PALADIJ
GLEN SPEY, NY – Boris Paladij died on October
18, 2003 at the St. Teresa’s Nursing Home in Middletown, NY.
He was 84.
The son of the late George and Maria Smerechansky
Paladij, he was born in the Ukraine.
He retired from Genpak Middletown and was a 30-year
area resident. He was a member of St. Volodymyr’s Ukranian
Catholic Church in Glen Spey.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Myroslava
Makowska Paladij and his son, George Paladij of Port Jervis.
Interment was at Glen Spey Cemetery.
GEORGE W. POLISANO
LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY -- George W. Polisano died on
October 15, 2003 at Achieve Rehabilitation and Nursing Facility
in Liberty, NY. He was 74.
The son of Vito Polisano, he was born in New York
City.
He served in the US Army Air Corps during WWII and
later worked as an airplane mechanic for US Air.
George is survived by a sister, Ann.
A Mass was held at St. Francis Roman Catholic Church
in Narrowsburg, NY, followed by interment in the church cemetery.

ETHEL L. WEIDNER
HONESDALE, PA – Ethel L. Weidner died on October
14, 2003 in Bethany Village, Bethany. She was 89.
The daughter of the late Albert and Barbara Germer
Ehrle, she was born in Cochecton, NY.
She was employed as a seamstress at Katz Underwear
Factory in Honesdale for 33 years before retiring. She was a member
of the St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran church in Honesdale
and a lifelong member of the Texas #4 Fire Company Ladies’
Auxiliary.
She is survived by a daughter, Marilyn McElroy of
Honesdale, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Interment took place at the Lutheran Cemetery in
Honesdale.
