Sullivan West 42, Tri-Valley 14

Bulldogs tame Bears in non-league battle

GRAHAMSVILLE, NY — For the second straight week, the Bulldogs’ offense came to life as Sullivan West used an effective ground and air assault to defeat Tri-Valley in a non-league game.

It wasn’t exactly what the Bears had in mind for their homecoming weekend. After dominating the Ellenville Blue Devils on October 11, the Bulldogs wasted no time in establishing the tone of the game. Junior Scott Peters had another banner Saturday. He accomplished an electrifying 58-yard punt return. The point after attempt was blocked. He caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Joe Meyer and threw a 35-yard option pass to Andre Trujillo for a third score.

The depth of the Bulldogs’ offense was evident as fullback Steven Daley and running back Orion Darder each chipped in with touchdowns. Daley scored on a one-yard run and Darder’s touchdown was four-yards. John Kitson recovered a fumble and ran 38 yards for a touchdown, which was followed by a two-point conversion. Sullivan West led 28-6 at halftime. Both touchdowns were augmented by extra point kicks.

According to coach Ron Bauer, “the running attack was well-divided.” Peter ran for 20 yards, Daley had 52, Jim Erlwein had 21 and Darder ran for 39. Meyer completed six out of 10 passes and Peters went two for two. Defensively, Steve Musso had 15 tackles and John Glassel was in on 11 tackles.

Tri-Valley found it difficult to sustain any drives against the Bulldog defense despite a good day by running back Josh Smith, who ran for 125 yards on 27 carries. Alan Coombe had eight carries for 33 yards.

Joe Garigliano scored both Tri-Valley touchdowns. He completed a 47-yard touchdown pass to Adam Whiteman and plunged one yard for a second score. Garigliano completed four out of 14 passes for 66 yards.

Tri-Valley (5-2) will play a non-league game against Milbrook on October 25 and close its regular season at home against Chester on November 1. Due to the fact that the Bears and Pine Plains are the only two Class C schools in Section 9, they will play for the Section title at Dietz stadium in mid-November.

Sullivan West (3-3) will conclude its season with a pair of Friday night games. On November 24, they will face Highland. If they win that league game, they will go to the title game at Dietz Stadium.

They will play a non-league game on October 31 at James. I. O’Neill to conclude the regular season.
