Delhi overcomes Sullivan West in battle of Bulldogs

By RICHARD A. ROSS

JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — Football is a game of opportunities. When they come your way, you have to take advantage of them. In the first half of the match up between Section Four Delhi and Sullivan West, the local Bulldogs had a chance to put the visitors away early, but failed to capitalize. A dropped ball on a kickoff return with an open field ahead, and a later dropped screen pass may have been the difference in a game that Delhi eventually came to dominate.

Delhi, the larger and more experienced team, came into this season on a mission to regain its former premier status. Class C state champions two years ago, Delhi faltered in the first round of the Section 4 playoffs last year against Tioga. In the first half of Saturday’s game, Sullivan West made them look ordinary, with a smothering defense that held Delhi scoreless throughout the first and most of the second quarter.

On offense, Sullivan West found its legs early on fine running by Orion Darder, who tallied 59 yards on five carries. Scott Peters, who ran for 42 yards on eight carries during the afternoon, got Sullivan West on the board at 6:38 of the first quarter on a halfback option pass to Andre Trujillo from the 28 yard-line. The point-after kick was blocked, and Sullivan West led 6-0 at the end of the quarter. On the next series, Delhi was stymied and had to punt. Peters received the ball and, with great blocks, looked about to break free up an open sideline. Somehow, the ball skittered out while he was running, and instead of a touchdown, Sullivan West got the ball on their own 33.

Delhi then deployed a steady barrage by senior fullback Matt Oliver. Still, Sullivan West managed to hold on, when an interception by Corey Hornicek stopped a Delhi drive that had advanced to Sullivan West’s 24-yard line. On their next possession, Delhi hit pay dirt on a 20-yard run by Oliver with 1:08 left in the half. The point-after kick was good, and Delhi led 7-6 at the half.

The second half was all Delhi. Sullivan West linebackers keyed on Oliver, giving quarterback Travis Mahler outside lanes on the option. After taking over on their own one-yard line, Sullivan West was forced to punt. A good roll put the ball back on Delhi’s 44 but a series of runs were capped by a 12-yard run by Brenton Wood, and Delhi led 14-6 after making the point-after kick.

Delhi added two more scores. The first was set up by an interception by John Wake and they subsequently cashed in on a four-yard run by John Newkirk. Oliver added the last score, and the blocked kick left Delhi with the final winning margin of 27-6.

Sullivan West coach Ron Bauer felt his team could have had three scores in the first half.

“We played a good first half. The kids played hard. We’ll get back to work on our defense this week,” said Bauer. Sullivan West plays John S. Burke Catholic on September 13 at 1:30 p.m. Burke lost its opening game to Chester.

JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — Sullivan West looked aggressive and scrappy in their first match of the year on September 4. Facing a Panther team overwhelmingly comprised of  juniors and seniors, the Bulldogs put up a spirited fight. The difference in the game was Monticello’s only sophomore, Krystian Krol, a player with exceptional skills, who racked up five goals with an uncanny combination of speed, deceptiveness, and accuracy. Krol repeatedly broke clear to where he could pinpoint his shots past Bulldog goalie Carlos Argueta. Junior Hugh Campbell opened the scoring at 38:13 of the first half, and added another goal later in the game.

Kienan Garn, playing in his first varsity game for the Bulldogs, answered with a goal at 28:35. Garn also had an assist in a goal scored by Mike Erlwein later in the first half.

Jonathan Reynolds tallied the last goal for the Bulldogs.

Monticello’s defense kept the ball away from goalie Chi-Woo Lee, who only had to save five shots. Meanwhile, at the other end of the field, Argueta was kept busy, as Monticello continually led their front line players, who banged away at Argueta to the extent that he tallied 15 saves.

Bulldogs coach Joe Ebeling, while pleased with his team’s effort, thought some of his players were winded during the latter part of the match. He expects conditioning will improve in the course of the season.

Monticello (1-0) is an “A” school, and Sullivan West (0-1) is a “B”.

Sullivan West 5, Walton 1

DOWNSVILLE, NY— Notching a win that already surpassed their victory total for all of last season, the Bulldogs got on track with a stream of goals. Billy Nordenhold had two scores, and  Kienan Garn, Mike Erlwein and Ed Raum added one each. The win followed a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Downsville on September 5. The Bulldogs are now 1-2.

Sullivan West 3, Walton 1

DOWNSVILLE, NY — Sullivan West rebounded from a tough 1-0 loss against Downsville on September 5 with their first win of the season against Walton the next day. In the opening round loss, the Bulldogs were unable to capitalize on a number of scoring chances in what turned out to be a game dampened by defense. In that regard, Coach Mahoney praised the efforts of Maura Mullally, goalie Amanda Patterson and Katie Thelman.

In Saturday’s game against Walton, the offense started clicking. Kate Fanning had two goals, and Kristen Brucher had one. Rachel Peloquin provided an assist, as did Brucher. Amanda Patterson had a fine day in goal. Breaking a 1-1 half time tie, Fanning scored 20 minutes into the second half to give the Bulldogs the lead. This coming week, Sullivan West plays away at Goshen on September 9, at Liberty on September 11 and home against Tri-Valley at 10:00 a.m on Saturday, September 13. The Bulldogs are currently 1-1.

Bulldogs' cross-country does well against possible state contenders

By RICHARD A. ROSS

WINDSOR, NY -Facing a number of probable state contenders, including pre-season number one-ranked Skaneateles, the Sullivan West Boys Bulldogs ran an impressive first meet against some great Section 4 teams. Seton Catholic, which finished fifth in the state last year, Horseheads and Lansing rounded out the field.

Ian Parnett led for more than two-thirds of the 2.7-mile course, but came in second with a time of 14:09, seven seconds behind leader Steve Carmello of Skaneateles. The Sullivan West boys' team placed second in the meet and got a great effort from Mike VanWagenen with a sixth place time of 14:21. Trevor Kreznar came in 26th with a time of 15:32. He was followed by Matt Gain (29th place, 15:36), Rob Ward (31st place, 15:38) and Adam Nebzydoski (94th, 20:17). Coach Shakelton declared himself very pleased with the team's effort.

The girls also ran well. Running without veteran Moselle DiPane, they placed 4th. April Ackerman placed eighth overall with a time of 17:34. Amanda Ward came in 16th with a time of 18:00. Jessica Wagner finished close behind her in 18th place at 18:07. The steadily improving Jamie Clifford posted a 20th place, in 18:10 . Kim Parks came in 65th with a time of 20:51. She, in turn, was followed by Ashley Reyes and Rebecca Peters.

The fine young girls' cross-country team had a preview of running against some of New York's State's best. Next up is the Washingtonville Invitational meet on September 13. Unfortunately, Warwick scheduled a meet of their own on the same day, and the Bulldogs will miss an early-season opportunity to run against one of Orange County's best teams.
