Biologists to discuss quality deer management
MATAMORAS, PA — The Pike County Branch of the Quality Deer
Management Association (QDMA) will host a banquet and workshop designed for
landowners, hunters and anyone interested in managing deer herds and
controlling their impact on forests and horticultural plantings on September 4
from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Best Western Inn at Hunts Landing. Doors will
open at 5:00 p.m. for registration.
Wildlife biologist Dr. Gary Alt of the Pennsylvania Game
Commission will give a slide presentation on the ecology of white-tailed deer
in Pennsylvania. He will describe how hunters and landowners can work together
to restore the health of forests and deer herds by applying principles of
scientific deer management.
Also, Maryland wildlife biologist and respected wildlife
author Dr. C.J. Winand will discuss effective hunting techniques and how to
restore and develop high quality wildlife habitat.
And QDMA Northeast director Kip Adams will give a
presentation on the principles of deer management and how it can bring the deer
herd back into balance with its habitat and produce larger, healthier deer.
Raffle items at the banquet will include two five-day
hunting trips, a Matthews compound bow, a Knight muzzle loader, a BisonGear
hunting pack, a wildlife camera, wildlife seed for food plots, apple trees,
books, clothing and more.

District offers trout for pond-stocking
The Sullivan County Soil and Water Conservation District
will offer stocks of rainbow, brook, and brown trout during its annual
trout-stocking program. The district will accept orders until Friday, September
19. Anyone interested in stocking a cold-water pond must apply for a
fish-stocking permit through the New York State Department of Environmental
Conservation in New Paltz.

Global warming and northeast forests
CUDDEBACKVILLE, NY — Steve Wofsy, professor of atmospheric
and environmental science at Harvard University, will deliver his lecture, “Our
Forests and Global Warming,” on Sunday, August 31 at 2:00 p.m. at the D & H
Canal Park.
Wofsy is a leading atmospheric scientist who has been
involved in ozone research for over 25 years.

Tour mature woodland with forester
LAKE WALLENPAUPACK, PA — Lacawac Sanctuary will host a nature
walk through the mature woodland (100 to 120 years old) at its 500-acre
preserve on Saturday, September 13 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.
Professional forester Bob Labar will explain the working
dynamics of a forest in “The Life of a Forest,” during which trees and wildlife
will be identified. Other topics will include the symbiotic relationships
between different plant and animal species, forest products and wetlands.
