Potential for public buses
By DONNA LUKIW
GLEN SPEY, NY — At the August 13 town board meeting
Lumberland Supervisor John LiGreci discussed public transportation and possible
solutions to assist medical services to respond to emergencies faster.
LiGreci wants to start a voluntary bus service system for
the public, especially in support of seniors, unlicensed drivers and youth.
These scheduled bus rides, he said, would travel from Route 42 to 97 passing by
the Bisland Agency, the Ukrainian church on County Road 41 and also stopping at
the Orange County line.
The purpose of the bus system is to provide transportation
to local shopping areas to disabled senior citizens or youth. LiGreci said he
hopes this will be underway in a year or less.
In other business, emergency services have complained about
not being able to locate houses due to unnamed roads or hidden house numbers.
LiGreci said the town board has asked the emergency 911 service to authorize
naming private and public roads. Homeowners are responsible for the naming of
private roads but need to address changes to the board and 911 for validation.
It is policy for the planning board, through resolution, to
name all new private roads and to number houses to allow residents to get
faster medical assistance, he said.
The board also accepted the resignation of Doris Reed, the
code enforcement clerk. Reed has been clerk for 16 years and has sent her
letter of resignation stating she will not be able to continue as of November
1, 2003 due to a physical condition. The board is seeking a replacement.
The next town board meeting will be on September 10 at 7:30
p.m. at the town hall.
