Sullivan West High School to open on time
By TOM KANE
JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — Despite rumors to the contrary, the new
Sullivan West High School will be open for business on Wednesday, September
3—right on time, school superintendent Michael Johndrow said August 7.
“The rumors are all wrong,” he said. “All the architects,
engineers, contractors and consultants assure me that it will happen on that
date.”
An orientation to the new building will be held for seniors,
juniors and their parents at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 27. Freshmen,
sophomores and their parents will view the building the next day, Thursday,
August 28 at 7:00 p.m.
Both Delaware Valley and Jeffersonville buildings will also
be ready by September 3 as well.
“DV, however, will not have the second floor ready until December
which is according to schedule,” Johndrow said. The Jeffersonville 1961 building
won’t be finished until mid-December, again according to schedule, he said.
The high school gym will not be finished until the end of
September and the auditorium will not be finished until the end of October,
he said.
“Curbs and sidewalks have been laid and the main road through
the complex is being laid today,” he said.
In other board matters, Handler spoke to the board, urging
them to send a letter to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, avoiding statements
for or against casinos, but rather, if casinos come, to urge that the schools
receive “an appropriate mitigation” from the tribes.
“Will the funding be $15 million or $5 million and will it
be every year for five years or done only once?” Handler urged the district
to ask.
