IRVIN G. BROOKS
SHOHOLA, PA — Irvin G. Brooks died July 19, 2003 at home.
His widow is the former Louise Helms Brooks, who died in 1993. The couple
was married for 72 years. He was 94.
The son of the late George and Catherine Gallagher Killam and adopted as an infant by the late Willard and Minnie Killam Brooks,
he lived in Lake Ariel and operated the GLF,
now known as the Agway Store, until 1953, when his family moved to Shohola
Falls. He and his wife operated a tourist business there until 1979,
at which time it was sold to his son Kenneth.
He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He attended both the Avoy Christian Church in Lake Ariel and the Good Shepherd
Episcopal Church in Milford.
Survivors include two sons, Bruce Brooks of Lake Ariel
and Kenneth Brooks and wife Lucie of Shohola Falls; two daughters, Kathryn
and her husband Joseph Schollar of Layton,
Utah and Carol and her husband Charles Evans of Valparaiso, FL; seven
grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A fall memorial service will be held.

WILLIAM W. BRUNS
LACKAWAXEN, PA — William W. Bruns died Tuesday, August 5, 2003 after a short illness.
The son of the late Frederick and Marichem Buddie Bruns,
he was born March 10, 1951 in Port Jervis, NY.
Survivors include his companion of 10 years, Debbie Beisel; her daughter, Tara and her sons; one sister, Joan
Knoll and her husband John of Lackawaxen; a
sister-in-law, Jean Bruns of Eau Claire, WI;
eight nieces and nephews; and 13 greatnieces and
nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother Fred of Eau Claire, WI.

EVELYN BRUSTMAN
OBERNBURG, NY — Evelyn Brustman, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, died
Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at the Grover M. Hermann Division of the Catskill
Regional Medical Center in Callicoon. She was 85.
The daughter of the late William and Elsie Theadore, she was born April 9, 1918, in Roscoe, NY.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church and
the Rosary Society of the church, both in Obernburg.
Survivors include her husband, Frederick Brustman,
at home; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Ruth Brustman;
a grandson Brian Brustman and his wife, Lori,
all of Obernburg; and two sisters, Eleanor Atkins and Clara Atkins,
both of Liberty. NY.
She was predeceased by three brothers, William, John and
George Theadore.

ARNOLD GEORGE DANIELS
HAWLEY, PA — Arnold George Daniels died August 2, 2003
at home. He was 74.
The son of the late Charles and Ada Chamberlain
Daniels, he was a native of Hawley, PA.
He was a US Army veteran serving during the Korean conflict.
He was also vice-president of the Dime Bank; he retired in 1988 after
35 years of service and was a member of the Honesdale United Methodist
Church, both in Honesdale, PA.
Survivors include his wife, Marian M. Daniels; his son,
David Daniels of Beach Lake, PA; his daughter, Pam Miszler of
Beach Lake; two stepsons, Fred Price of Pilot Mountain, NC and Brett
Price of Dobson, NC; two stepdaughters, Sharon Blythe of Kannapolis,
NC and Patty Champion of Weaverville, NC; eight grandchildren and one
great grandchild.

GEORGE E. DEWEY
HAWLEY, PA — George E. Dewey died August 11, 2003 at Wayne
Memorial Hospital following an illness. He was 72.
The son of the late Nelson and Myrtle Eade Dewey,
he was born in Hawley.
He was employed at J. Vance Hunt and Son and area newspapers.
He was a member of Wayne County Sports Hall of Fame, former deputy sheriff
and supervisor/deputy warden of Wayne County Prison, co-founder of Hawley
Athletic Association and Wayne County Sportsman’s Association and president
of Hawley Borough Council on which he served for over 12 years. He was
a former Hawley fireman and an early Hawley ambulance driver and Hawley
Borough policeman.
He was an avid sportsman, longtime baseball umpire and
an active golfer.
Survivors include his wife, Rhoda J. Dewey of Hawley, PA;
three brothers, Herbert Dewey of Montrose, PA, Joseph Dewey of Springville,
PA and Douglas Dewey of Syracuse, NY; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother Edward and a sister Vivian.

ARTHUR JOHN ERICKSON
EAST STROUDSBURG, PA — Arthur John Erickson died Wednesday,
July 30, 2003 at home. He was 66.
The son of the late Axel and Gladys Carlson Erickson, he
was born in Bay Ridge, NY. He was raised in Dingmans Ferry by his aunt
and uncle, Lillian and William Hennessy.
Arthur and Nota Brady Mostellar were the founders and owners of Erickson’s Bakery
and Erickson’s Landscaping. He was also the founder and owner of Godfather
Exterminating Co., Ericksons Christmas Trees
and Erickson’s International. He was formerly quality control supervisor
at Ames Rubber Corp. and he also worked as a pre-arrangement counselor
for Cook-Waldon Funeral Home, Austin, TX.
Survivors include three daughters, Sally George and her
husband Kirk, Elizabeth Erickson Kameen and
husband Joe of Dingman’s Ferry, Linda Reisenwitz and
husband, Chris; eight siblings, Marylin Tornick of Matawan, NJ, Gladys Herman of Jensen Beach, FL,
Lillian Harris of Port St. Lucis West, FL,
John Erickson of Narrowsburg, NY, Harry Erickson of Long Island, NY,
Jan Morgan of Dingmans Ferry, Donald Holdorff of
CA and Fran Bradley of Middletown, NJ; and nine grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Arthur John; and a sister,
Gloria Guastella; and his beloved Molly.

MATTHEW JOSEPH FREDA
CALLICOON, NY — Matthew Joseph “Joe” Freda, owner of Matthew
J. Freda Real Estate, died August 7, 2003. He was 84.
The son of Francis Joseph Freda and Grace Reynolds Freda,
he was born June 30, 1919 in Hammonton, NJ.
A retired U. S. Air Force Colonel, he flew combat missions
in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was awarded two presidential citations
and many decorations and service medals, including the Distinguished
Flying Cross, Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal and Air
Force Commendation Medal. During World War II his plane was shot down
in Chinese territory behind Japanese lines. After parachuting into the
Himalayan Mountains, he led his flight crew on a six-week trek to the
safety of Allied troops controlling the Burma Road.
After his Air Force career, he founded Matthew J. Freda
Real Estate in 1971. He was named Realtor of the Year in 1994 by the
Sullivan County Board of Realtors. He served as president of the Sullivan
County Board of Realtors, as a director of the Mid-Hudson Chapter of
the Society of Real Estate Appraisers and as a member of the Pike/Wayne
Association of Realtors.
Freda served as president of the Callicoon Kiwanis Club
and Master of the Delaware Masonic Lodge. He served on the Callicoon
Business Association since its inception. He was appointed by two New
York State governors to the Tocks Island Council and by the Governor
of Pennsylvania to the Upper Delaware Citizens Advisory Council. He served
on the Sullivan County Environmental Management Council, the Sullivan
County Neversink-Delaware Study Commission,
as director of the Water Resources Association of the Delaware River
Basin and as associate director of the Wayne County Conservation District.
For years he wrote the “River Ripples” column in the Sullivan
County Democrat about people in the river corridor. He loved planting
and tending his fruit trees, blueberries and roses. He was a graduate
of Cornell University where he studied soil science.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty May Robbins
Freda; his son Joseph Matthew Freda and his wife Elise of Kenoza Lake;
his daughter, Mary Helene Freda Bell and her husband Daniel of Atlanta;
his daughter, Lynne Freda Capobianco of Tampa,
FL; his daughter, Susan Ruth Freda Woodcock and her husband Ronald, of
Framingham, MA; and son Thomas Jesse Freda and wife Cathy of Damascus,
PA.
He was the loving and beloved grandfather of 10 grandchildren.
He is also survived by sisters Peggy Freda, Patricia Willoughby, and
Rosemary Freda and by brothers Richard Freda and John David Freda. He
was predeceased by a sister, Mary, and a brother, Paul, in childhood.
A military funeral and burial will be held in Arlington
National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, August 27 at 11:00
a.m.
EUNICE LARSEN
JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — Eunice Larsen died Tuesday, August
5, 2003, at the Seelig Division of the Catskill
Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 81.
The daughter of the late James and Edna O’Hare McGee, she
was born March 18, 1922, in North Bergen, NJ. She was the widow of Frederick
B. Larsen.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert
and Patricia Larsen of Washington Township, NJ and Richard and Betty
Larsen of Great Meadows, NJ; a brother, John “Bud” McGee of WA; and six
grandchildren.
WASYL NAUM
GLEN SPEY, NY — Wasyl Naum,
a retired banquet waiter at the Hilton Hotel, New York City, and a 14-year
resident of the area, died Saturday, August 9, 2003 at his home. He was
87.
The son of the late Kyrylo and
Alexandra Naum, he was born June 10, 1916 in
Ford City, PA.
At the age of five, he went to Ukraine with his parents,
where he grew up. He was a member of St. Volodymyr’s Ukrainian
Catholic Church, Glen Spey, the Ukrainian National
Association, the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists and the Organization
for the Defense of the Four Freedoms of Ukraine.
Survivors include his wife, Stefa Szewczyk Naum, at home; and his
son Taras Naum of
Phoenix, AZ.
He was predeceased by a son, Roman Naum.

MILDRED L. SCOTT
BEACH LAKE, PA — Mildred L. Scott, a retired housekeeper
and lifetime resident of the area, died Wednesday, August 6, 2003 at Murry-Tufts-Garret Manor in Beach Lake, PA where she had
been a resident for over 15 years. She was formerly from Fosterdale and
Jeffersonville. She was 87.
The daughter of Walter and Ida Layton Scott, she was born
August 23, 1915 in Fosterdale, NY.
Survivors include three nieces, Betty Morse of Clintondale, NY, Beverly DiCapua of
Highland, NY and Marilyn Slizewski of Poughkeepsie,
NY; and one nephew, Robert Williams of Monticello, NY.

MICHAEL A. SCULLION
COCHECTON, NY — Michael A. Scullion, an employee of Allied
Movers in New York City, died Saturday, August 2, 2003, at the Veterans
Administration Medical Center in Castle Point. He was 49.
The son of Allan and Joan Shaw Scullion, he was born April
29, 1954, in Wilmington, DE.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his parents of Cochecton; four children,
Angela, Richard and Erica Scullion of FL, and Jessica Scullion of Queens;
three brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Linda Scullion of Long
Island, John and Veronica Scullion of Port Chester and James and Susan
Scullion of the Bronx; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Brenda
Scullion of Long Island, Nancy and Harold Rhodes of Jeffersonville and
Wendy and Richard Sontag of AZ; three grandchildren;
and several nieces and nephews.

WAYNE D. WELLS
CALLICOON, NY — Wayne Douglas Wells of West End, NC died
at his home on Saturday, August 2, 2003. He was 67.
The son of the late Earl and Ada Wells,
he was born August 18, 1935, in Callicoon.
He completed the machinist apprentice course at General
Electric in 1956. He received a BS degree in mechanical engineering from
Union College in Schenectady in 1960 and was employed at General Electric
for 10 years. He retired in 1991 from IBM, after 25 years of service
during which time he was a manager in Research Triangle Park, NC. Since
his retirement, he enjoyed woodworking and landscaping.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Joann Ann Wells,
at home; two daughters, Terry Wells Baker of Raleigh, NC and Diane Wells
Pace of Cary, NC; two sisters, Norma Aaron of West End, NC and Berniece Haas
of Eldred; a brother, George Wells of Cookeville, TN; five grandchildren,
and many other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by a son, Glenn Douglas Wells and a
sister, Dorothy Wells.
