Highland bash
this weekend
ELDRED, NY — After months of planning and preparations, the
Town of Highland’s 150th birthday party is on for this weekend.
Truth be told, the old Sullivan County Board of Supervisors
subdivided the old Town of Lumberland in December of 1853, but not willing
to rely on December weather for an outdoor party, the town scheduled Saturday,
August 9 as the day of celebration.
The program includes a pancake breakfast from 8:00 a.m. to
11:00 a.m. at the town hall, followed by a program at the Minisink Battleground
Park titled “150 Years of People and Places,” featuring craft demonstrations
and music. Regional historians John Conway, Mary Curtis and Peter Osborne
will be on hand to detail the major eras of town history. The park program
is scheduled from 11:00 a.m. though 4:00 p.m.
The day continues with a carnival on the lower grounds of
the Eldred Central School from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and there will be
fireworks at dusk.
