More AP sections open to meet overflow at Sullivan West

By RICHARD A. ROSS

JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — New sections of Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition and Economics and Government will be provided at the new high school in Lake Huntington this fall. Initially, only the top twenty students were enrolled in the courses, but the district sent a July 17 letter to those applicants who had been closed out advising them of the change of plan.

Board members had received phone calls from parents, as had Superintendent Johndrow, Assistant Superintendent Gregory and principal Margie Tembus.

In addition to the letter, students were given summer coursework that must be completed prior to the opening of school on September 3. Both the English and Economic/Government courses delineated assignments that would be due on opening day. The letter stated the goal of the program “is to provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to be successful when taking the Advanced Placement exams in May, 2004.”

To that end the district is requiring that students must maintain an 85 average in the corresponding coursework in order to maintain their enrollment in the program. Evaluations will be made at the end of the first report period, October 2.
