Newport resigns as roadmaster
By TOM KANE
DAMASCUS, PA — Damascus Township Supervisor Larry Newport
will no longer act as one of the roadmasters for the township. His resignation
was effective July 18, 2003.
Newport shared the responsibility of roadmaster and township
supervisors William Gager and Stan Kuta.
“Larry is taking another job,” Gager said at the township
board’s last meeting on July 21.
Newport will, however, continue in his office as supervisor
for the remainder of his term.
Newport was not present at the meeting and could not be reached
for comment by press time.
The township board will not hire another roadmaster but will
divide the roads that Newport serviced between Gager and Kuta.
In other board matters, the resurfacing of Atco Road was back
again as unfinished business.
Four years ago the road was repaved by the Suit Kote Company
and began to deteriorate soon after the repaving job. The board only now
has worked out an agreement with them to help repave the road. But the board
has changed the particulars of the agreement in regard to the amount of stone
that will be laid down.
The original agreement stated that Suit-Kote would truck 450
tons of stone of the 1,000 tons needed to repair the road. Now, the township
says it can’t afford 1,000 tons of stone but has cut the number to the original
450.
“Our engineer says it won’t make a whole lot of difference,”
Kuta said.
The repaving of the road is scheduled for August 11.
“We have hired an engineering firm who will be present at
the repaving,” Kuta said.
