Best of north and south face off in Little League All-Star game

COCHECTON CENTER, NY — The North may have won the Civil War, but the South team of the Delaware Valley Little Fellas’ League made their own history on June 26 with a 12-1 win over their Northern rivals in the 2003 All-Star game at Heinle’s Field. The combined team of the Narrowsburg Braves, Dodgers and League champion Cochecton Center Giants held sway over the North team, made up of Pennsylvania’s Phillies, Cardinals and Mets in a local version of the Clash of the Titans.

Despite good pitching from the Phillies’ Sage Ranze of Milanville, the North team had trouble handling the hard hitting and aggressive base running of the South. Chris Story of Lake Huntington, a senior on the Giants, was particularly menacing. His two home runs including a mammoth three-run shot to right field propelled the offense. He was aided and abetted by Shawn Taylor of Cochecton Center from the Giants. Taylor also had a three-run jack.

Starting South pitcher Zack Cortese of Beach Lake from the Braves provided strong start pitching. He struck out two of the first three batters he faced and was in good command during his outing on the mound. From the first inning on, his teammates staked him to a hefty lead and he was able to cruise with a minimum of effort. The game ended after six innings due to a shortage of pitchers from the North team and the one-sided score.

The game was well attended by parents and friends and community residents. The annual All-Star game gives the five best players from each team a chance to shine. Just as in the Major League All- Star game, things got under way with pre-game ceremonies that included the “Star Spangled Banner.” Each player was introduced as the two teams lined up on opposite baselines.

The North team was comprised of the following players from the Cardinals: Cord Vannata, Ryan Kelly, Travis Canfield, Mat Szwayka and Kyle Rickard. From the Mets: Jonathon Levy, Joshua Schofield, James O’Brien, Dennis Porcaro and Mike Rushanski. From the Philllies: Phillip Vandelinde, Shane Hocker, Eliza Vandelinde, Sage Ranze and Eric Diehl. The South team was comprised of the following players from the Braves: Coulter McPhail, Spencer Paparella, Tory Samon, Brice Billard and Zack Cortese. From the Dodgers: Anthony Tomasello, Dylan Everett, Justin Ziser, Shayne Peck and Tim McCloud. From the Giants: Jeremy DeGori, Michael Pierce, Mike Pomes, Chris Story and Shawn Taylor.

Little League baseball is made possible by the commitment of parents and coaches. The following coaches guided their teams, including Lionel Billard and Rob Zaccari of the Braves, Chuck and Audrey Neer of the Cardinals, Wayne Peck of the Dodgers, Dick Pomes and Peter Pierce of the Giants, Richard and Vera Schofield of the Mets and Tiger Yanacek of the Phillies.

The Giants, who ended their season with a 10-0 record, will play in the Honesdale tournament on July 1. Congratulations to all of the players, coaches and their parents for making this year’s little league season a memorable one.
