Canoe regatta rescheduled

CALLICOON, NY — The Fifth Annual Canoe Regatta scheduled for Sunday, June 22 was cancelled because of rain. It has been rescheduled for Saturday, July 26, the same day as the Callicoon Street Fair.

Wetlands experts to present lecture

MILANVILLE, PA — Roy Morsch of Wayne County, PA and Ed Zygmunt of Susquehanna County, PA will share their expertise on wetlands at the Delaware Highlands Conservancy’s Butterfly Barn Nature Center at 10:00 a.m. on June 28. The public is invited to learn how they created wetlands, ask questions and view photographs of the results.

“Wetlands are fragile ecosystems which are among the most threatened and important biomes on the planet. They scrub pollutants from water, protect the atmosphere’s ozone layer and are a home to many endangered species,” say Paul Rezendes and Paulette Roy in their book, “Wetlands: The Web of Life.”

Ten million years ago, retreating glaciers left in their wake a bounty of wetlands in the Catskills and Poconos. Yet today, many of these intricate systems have been lost to agriculture and sprawling development. Is it possible to recreate such systems?

Morsch and Zygmunt have each created wetlands within the last two years that are now fully alive and functioning.
