ROBERT W. FERBER
CALLICOON, NY — Robert W. Ferber of Zephyrhills, FL, a retired
captain of the New York State Corrections Department, died Sunday, May 18,
2003 at his home. He was 70 years old.
The son of the late Edwin and Laura Ferber, he was born February
24, 1933 in Callicoon.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Ferber, at home; a son and
daughter-in-law, Keith and Sharon Ferber of Callicoon Center; two daughters,
Karla and her husband Clinton Ackerly of Brown’s Mills, NJ and Laura Ferber
of Zephyrhills, FL; two step-daughters and their spouses, Joyce and David
Merrill of Orem, UT and George and Anna Teeter of West Sacramento, CA; a
brother and sister-in-law, Virginia and Paul Stewart of Pine City; an aunt
and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased
by two bothers, Leonard and Bruce.
Burial will be private.

EUGENE A. GARVEY
MATAMORAS, PA — Eugene A. Garvey died on Tuesday, May 20, 2003
at the Gino Merli Veterans Hospital in Scranton. He was 75.
The son of John and Helen (McDonnell) Garvey, he was born in
Scranton on January 16, 1938. He was the widower of Grace Keenan Garvey who
predeceased him on March 2, 2002.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Matamoras, and was
a World War II army veteran. Mr. Gavey was a member of the Knights of Columbus
Council #471, Port Jervis, the Mount Laurel VFW Post #8612 and the Marsch-Kellogg
American Legion Post #139, both of Milford. He was wreck master for the Erie
Railroad for 28 years and was a retired logistics engineer for Picatinny
Arsenal, Dover, NJ. He served as Pike County Commissioner from 1996 to 1999.
Survivors include two sons, Timothy of Matamoras and Gene of
Apex, NC; one daughter, Marilyn DeVries of Jim Thorp, PA; one bother, Thomas
of Lindenwald, NJ; five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was
predeceased by a son, Patrick.
BERNARD GRILL
BEACH LAKE, PA — Bernard Grill died on Monday, May 19, 2003
at home. He was 68.
Survivors include his wife, Ingrid; two daughters, Monica and
Doris; one sister, Renate; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation took place at Twin Tiers Crematory, Endicott, NY.

PHYLLIS MARY (COLELLA) HANC
HAWLEY, PA — Phyllis Mary Hanc died on Wednesday, May 28 at
the Julia Ribaudo Senior Care Center, Lake Ariel, PA. She was 59.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of the late Peter
and Mary Colella of Brooklyn.
She is survived by her husband, Paul of Titusville, FL; four
daughters, Lori Diuzak of Victor, NY, Lisa Gehringer of Tobyhanna, PA, Susan
Hanc of Charleston, NC, and Paulette Hanc of Titusville, FL; two brothers,
Peter Colella of Staten Island and John Colella of New York City; one sister,
Santa Colella of Staten Island; nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren
and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Antoinelle Simonetti,
and a brother, Joseph Colella.
Cremation was held at H.G. Smith Crematory of Stroudsburg,
PA.

ARLENE M. VANHORN HITCHNER
HAWLEY, PA — Arlene M. (Haas) VanHorn Hitchner, a 14-year resident,
died on May 23, 2003 at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale. She was 85 years
old.
Born in Easton, PA, she was the daughter of the late Howard
Krecker Haas and Mary I.C. Breish. Before moving to Hawley, she resided in
Palmer Twp., Easton and Philadelphia.
A graduate of Easton High School, Class of 1936, she attended
Kutztown State Teachers College and received a Bachelor of Science degree
in biology, science and English at Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL, in 1941.
Later she pursued graduate studies at Temple University in Philadelphia.
She was a student of voice at Hamilton School of Music, Philadelphia, under
the late George Lapham. Following graduation, she was accepted as a soprano
artist with the Metropolitan Opera in New York, but turned down the offer
to teach and devote her talents to full-time Christian religious service.
She was affiliated with Cole Memorial Baptist Church, Hawley.
Mrs. Hitchner taught in the Sellersville-Perkasie Schools in
the 1940s. Later, she taught English at the former Bible Institute of Pennsylvania
and became chairman of the Department of English and Dean of Women at the
Philadelphia College of Bible, now located in Langhorne, PA
Following her marriage to the late George Russell VanHorn of
Palmer Twp., she taught at Easton Area High School. Mr. Van Horn died in
1993.
She is survived by her husband of 9 years, James Hitchner,
MD; two sons, Kim G. Van Horn of Pleasanton, CA and George Van Horn of Plainfield
Twp., PA; stepson Steven Hitchner of Willow Springs, NC; stepdaughter Elinor
Lengle of Morristown, NJ; two brothers, Howard Haas of Laverne, CA and Jerry
Haas of Chester County, PA; and four grand children.
Internment took place at Northampton Memorial Shrine, Palmer
Twp. Easton, PA.

JESSIE ELEANOR JASCHEK
HIGHLAND, NY — Jessie Eleanor Jaschek, an accounting clerk
for Avon Products, formerly of Highland Lake, NY and more recently of Highland,
NY, died on Thursday, May 22, 2003 at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie,
NY. She was 89.
The daughter of Harry and Annie Lipfert Roth, she was born
on September 16, 1913 in New York City. She was married to the late Max Jaschek
who passed away in 1989.
Survivors include her sister, Gladys Maneri and her husband
Sal of Port Washington, NY; four nieces and one nephew.
Burial was in Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery, Liberty, NY.

ELIZABETH ANNE MARITATO PEZZELLA
WHITE MILLS, PA — Elizabeth Anne Maritato Pezzella died on
Friday, May 30, 2003 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. She was 61.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, William Pezzella.
She was born in Brooklyn, NY and was the daughter of the late
Joseph Maritato and Genevieve Barlow. She was a housekeeper in Lukan’s Farm
Resort, Hawley. She was a former employee of the Big Apple Auto & Limo
Service, Bensonhurst, NY
She was a member and volunteer for the Wayne Memorial Hospital
Auxiliary and Other Shop and a member of the While Mills Fire Department
Auxiliary.
Also surviving is a son, William Pezzella, Jr. of Nanticoke,
PA; two daughters, Donna and husband David Pezzella-Thacher of White Mills,
PA and Patricia and husband John Boyle of Rockaway, NY; four sisters, Dorothy
Maritato and Connie Maritato, both of Lake Ariel, PA; Genevieve McCann of
Allen, TX; and Dorothy Ruppert of Brooklyn, NY; three granddaughters, two
grandsons and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, John, James, and
William.
Cremation was held at H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg, PA.
