Students honored at academic achievement dinner
By RICHARD
A. ROSS
ELDRED, NY — The room was filled with talent and promise as
students making up the top four percent of each of the county’s school districts
attended the eighteenth annual academic achievement dinner sponsored by Sullivan
County school districts. Superintendents, board presidents, principals and
each school’s academic elite joined Dr. Martin Handler and Sullivan
County Manager Dan Briggs for the June 2 celebration.
Following welcoming remarks by Handler, highlighted by his
reading of the poem “Desiderata,” Briggs addressed the students, commending
them on their achievements and success. Success will be key, he quipped in
“paying my generation’s social security.”
On a more serious note, Briggs noted that students will be
asked to confront the complex world of increased technology where the line
may blur between the advances in science and issues of morality.
“How can we safeguard our personal freedoms in an era where
E-ZPass and credit cards make your whereabouts and purchases readily known?”
he asked.
A graduate of Monticello, Briggs had some good advice.
“Pay attention to manners. Please and thank you make doors
swing open. And don’t forget about honesty. Take responsibility for your
mistakes. Remember, more people want to see you do well than want to see
you fail. Finally, keep your sense of humor.”
Each student then received a copy of the poem “Desiderata”
and a thesaurus, compliments of The Times Herald Record.
After being announced by their superintendent, the students
briefly stated where they will attend college and what they will study.

School of hard rock
NARROWSBURG, NY — Traditionally, Sullivan West at Narrowsburg
P.T.S.O. celebrates staff appreciation week with a jazzy theme, and this
year’s “Rock and Roll with our Staff” was no exception.
The week consisted of cookie day, raffle day, baked goods
day, Italian luncheon day, and of course rock and roll day. Dancin’ Dan and
his dynamic jams rocked and rolled at the school assembly where staff and
students dressed up like their favorite rock stars or groups.
The Beatles made an appearance along with Pink and Bruce Springstein.
Mrs. Krauss’ first grade took first place in the dance contest followed by
the seventh grade in second place, and in third place was Mrs. Meunier’s
kindergarten class.
The P.T.S.O. appreciates all of the hard work and dedication
the staff at Narrowsburg continues to show the students each and every day.
With their enthusiasm and zest for teaching, they make the school an enjoyable
place to learn and grow.
