Bulldogs rout Chester and Chapel Field

By RICHARD A. ROSS

JEFFERSONVILLE, NY—The Bulldogs were too much for visiting Chapel Field and Chester in both boys’ and girls’ competition on April 30. Sullivan West ran its record to 3-0, 3-0 OCIAA.

A terrific race in the open 400 between winner April Ackerman (64.9) and Jessica Wagner (65.9) was a highlight. Jamie Clifford was the first girl to run under 2:40 in the 800 (2:37), and in the mile, Amanda Ward and Clifford ran competitive times of 5:34 and 5:38. Ackerman also triple jumped 30 feet for the first time, a distance close to the top in her section.

The key meet of the year is on May 7 when Sullivan West faces off against Tri-Valley. To win the division, the Bulldogs need to find a way to beat the Bears, a tall order. Coach Shakelton needs strategy to avoid burning his athletes out in events that Sullivan West cannot win.

In the boys’ events, Ian Parnett ran a 4:38 mile, only a second off the top time in the section run by Steven Furst. Mike VanWagenan ran well in the 4x800, the 800 open and the 3200. In the 3200, his time of 11:05 was impressive considering how much running he had to do before that event. Seth Hodge of Roscoe, who has joined the Sullivan West team, ran a good 400 (532.3), and Mike Kitson set a Sullivan West record in the pole vault at 10.0.

Bulldogs hold on to beat Liberty

By RICHARD A. ROSS

LIBERTY, NY—Big leads are nice, but they can evaporate in a hurry. Heading into the bottom of the seventh inning at Liberty on April 29, the Bulldogs were cruising with an 8-2 lead. Starting pitcher Everett Saul had managed to keep the Indians quiet for the better part of the game while Sullivan West began to pile up runs.

Jake Sauer-Jones started a rally in the second inning with a walk, and Mike Washington followed with a single. Sean Kelly singled in Sauer-Jones and Ed Raum’s ground out brought Washington home.

In the fourth, the Bulldogs appeared to break the game wide open, scoring five runs through a combination of a lead-off double by Sauer-Jones and hits by Kelly and Bill Nordenhold. Liberty helped things along when a two-base error allowed Sauer-Jones and Kelly to score. Nordenhold went to third. Matt Berger followed with a moon shot home run to right.

Liberty got its first run in the bottom of the fifth after Ashton Richards led off and reached first on an error. He proceeded to steal second and third and scored on a grounder by Corey Pazzalia.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Indians got busy. Sophomore Matt Berger was on the mound for the Bulldogs. After giving up a lead-off single to Dan Ratner, he walked Jason Garritt. Pazzalia followed with a two-run triple. A single from Joe Colarcurcio knocked him in. Woes continued as Derek Blume reached first on an error. Conner Noetzel brought Colacurcio home with a single before the rally finally ended.

Following a spring break week that witnessed three Bulldog losses, the victory was sweet, especially since it constituted a Division IV win. Sullivan West improved to 3-5, 3-2 OCIAA while Liberty fell to 2-7, 1-3 OCIAA.

Livingston Manor 5, Eldred 4

ELDRED, NY—The Yellowjackets tried to capitalize on a good complete game outing by John Martin to notch its first victory since 2001. It wasn’t to be. Wildcat Josh Mendez singled in the winning run in the top of the eighth, giving Manor the Division V win. Winning pitcher Brian Will struck out 11 batters in eight innings. Bobby Caputa who went 4 for 4 and Brian Smith who had two hits helped propel the Manor win. Vinny Reilly doubled for Eldred whose record sunk to 0-5, 0-2 OCIAA. The April 30 matchup was the season opener for Manor (1-0, 1-0 OCIAA).

Cornwall 11, Sullivan West 3

CORNWALL, NY—The Green Dragons coasted to a win over Sullivan West on May 1. Pete Gilardo just missed hitting for the cycle with a single, double and home run. He drove in three RBI in the non-league victory. Steven King was the winning pitcher. He allowed six hits over four innings. Bulldog Bill Nordenhold went 3-for-4 and Ryan Taylor went 2 for 3. Sullivan West saw its non-league record fall to 3-6. Cornwall is now 8-3 overall.

Eldred 5, Fallsburg 4

Eldred notches its first win since ’01

ELDRED, NY—Coach Frank Kean has stayed positive throughout the long drought. Always a teacher and mentor, Kean has encouraged his players to stay in the game, keep their heads up and stick to the fundamentals. It paid off on May 3 as the Yellowjackets rode a great pitching performance by freshman Mike Prunka to a 4-3 victory over the Fallsburg Comets. Prunka added two hits to his own cause. The Yellowjackets are a predominantly freshman squad with 9 out of the team’s 14 players. The victory was the first win since the 2001 season. Prunka struck out 12 and walked just two. The win moves Eldred to 1-2, 0-5 OCIAA while Fallsburg fell to 0-2, 0-6 OCIAA.

Sullivan West 10, Monticello 7

JEFFERSONVILLE, NY—Everett Saul went 2-for-3 and Ryan Taylor went 2-for-4 to help Sullivan West to a non-league win over the Monticello Panthers. The win advanced the Bulldogs’ record to 4-6 overall. Their current league record is 3-2. The Panthers fell to 5-6 overall. Their league record at this point stands at 0-3.

Manor pitcher Jennifer Wright was effective but Liberty touched up the Wildcats with some timely hits. Andrea TerBush went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and Christine Waryha added an RBI double. Liberty improved to 2-1 while Manor fell to 0-2.

Bulldogs use a pair of two-out rallies to beat Burke

JEFFERSONVILLE, NY—For the Bulldogs, April 29 was a day when hustle really paid off in a Divison III win. Following two scoreless innings, the Lady Eagles scored a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Kristin Said. In the fourth, the Bulldogs came back. Leslie Bright led off with a single and promptly stole second. Rachel Peloquin advanced Bright to third with a bunt. Heather Nober reached first safely on an infield grounder and the score was deadlocked at 1-1. Nober proceeded to steal second and Amanda Patterson beat the throw to first to put runners on at the corners. A double by Jessica Lederman’s put the Bulldogs up 3-1.

In the fifth inning, the Bulldogs widened the gap. With one out, Katrina Meyer hustled to first beating out the throw. Bright grounded out but Tiffany Hauser was hit by a pitch. The preseason base running skills stressed by Coaches Meyer and Ellmauer paid dividends as Meyer and Hauser executed a double steal while Peloquin was at bat. That gave the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead. A Burke error on Peloquin’s grounder extended the inning and allowed Hauser to score.

The Lady Eagles came back with two runs in the sixth inning, but Bulldog hurler Erin Rosenberger was able to work out of a couple of late inning jams to hold on for the win. She struck out five batters and gave up only three hits.

Sullivan West evened its record at 2-2, 2-2 Division III while Burke fell to 3-6, 2-3 Division III.

Livingston Manor 11, Eldred 7

ELDRED, NY—Despite fine efforts on April 30 by Stephanie Venturini who had two hits and four RBI, Eldred failed to record its first win of the season. Jene Shafter also had three hits and an RBI for the Yellowjackets but Livingston Manor’s Jen Wright and Liz Weickum countered with some offense of their own. Wright went 2-for-5 with two RBI, and Weickum chipped in with three hits and two RBI as Manor (1-3, 1-1 OCIAA) prevailed. Eldred’s record fell to 0-4, 0-4 OCIAA.
