Youth in Focus

Designing Damascus students stamp out boring stamps
Stamps commemorate people, places and events while making
personal correspondence special through a unique use of color, design and
lettering. When people design stamps, their artwork can become a miniature
masterpiece seen by a vast audience. When it comes to U.S. postage stamps,
a group known as the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee, which is composed
of educators, artists and experts in their fields, recommend subjects to
the Postmaster General.
In a local endeavor, a group of Damascus fourth graders from
the classes of Kathy Martin and Leona Dean designed these one-of-a-kind stamps
that pictured below.
Judy Diehl, Officer in Charge of the Milanville Post Office,
challenged the students to participate. Cast your vote for your favorite
philatelic endeavor!
The original entries are on view at the Milanville Post Office.
Ballots may be cast there or returned to The River Reporter by May 5.
Winners will be announced at an assembly at the Damascus School
on May 5 at 2:15 p.m. First, second and third place winners will receive
ribbons donated by J&C Awards of Tyler Hill and prizes from the United
States Post Office, and all participants will be recognized.
