Pitching woes lead to a pair of Yellowjacket losses

ELDRED, NY—Coach Frank Kean is either clairvoyant or a man
who knows his teams’ strengths and weaknesses.
His prediction three weeks ago that “this season ISbound to
be a learning experience” is right on target. It’s going to take time for
the young Eldred arms to find the groove.
The horrendous early spring weather hasn’t helped and at this
juncture, the opposing batters aren’t fooled. In the season opener on April
15 against Tuxedo, Yellowjacket pitchers gave up a pair of two-run home runs
and numerous hits in the 15-1 pounding.
Tuxedo hurler Dan Malmeiser allowed only five hits and struck
out nine over six innings. Tuxedo improved its record to 2-0 by sending Eldred
to its second straight loss. Devin Weyant, John Martin and John Harris were
able to connect on singles, but the Yellowjackets couldn’t string hits together
to do any damage.
The next day was more of the same.
This time, Chester (2-2) took advantage of errant pitching
and scored seven runs in the first inning. Eldred starter John Harris gave
way to Nick McKormick and then to Walter Kridel, who was able to get out
of the first inning with no further damage. George Fountain’s thunderous
double in the bottom of the inning provided Eldred with two of its four runs.
Eldred’s record fell to 0-3.

Platt’s six-hitter stymies Bulldogs
GOSHEN, NY—John S. Burke’s Scott Platt notched his second
win of the season by throwing a six-hitter against the Bulldogs. He struck
out seven in the OCIAA Division IV win, which pushed the Eagles’ record to
3-0. Matt Berger of Sullivan West went two for three. Ryan Taylor (0-1) pitched
two innings and gave up six runs. He struck out four but gave up three home
runs. Matt Berger relieved him and pitched four innings and gave up four
runs. The Bulldogs’ record is now 2-2, 2-1 OCIAA.

Yellowjackets off to a rough start

PINE BUSH, NY — Nothing in practice could have prepared
the young Eldred team for the dazzling pitching of Julie Schaper of Chapel
Field.
Last year, though she was only a sophomore, Schaper was regarded as virtually
un-hittable. The bad news for her opponents this year is she seems to
have gotten better. The young and relatively inexperienced Eldred team drew
Chapel
Field for their season opener on April 15. Schaper introduced herself
to the Yellowjackets by striking out 14. The good news was it was over soon.
The 15-run rule cut the game short after only five innings. Schaper helped
her cause by going two for three with three RBI to give Chapel Field
(1-1,
1-0 OCIAA) its first league win. Eldred fell to 0-1, 0-1OCIAA.
Oliphant’s one-hitter hampers Eldred
ELDRED, NY — The powerful hitting of Theresa Space combined
with the one-hit performance of S. S. Seward’s pitcher Melissa Oliphant to
hand the Yellowjackets their second loss in as many days. In the April 16
game, Space hit a two-run home run and had an impressive five RBI in a Division
V game. Oliphant pitched a complete game and stuck out nine.
Problems began for the Yellowjackets in the top of the second
inning when the Spartans put together a series of walks, stolen bases and
hits while taking advantage of a passed ball from Eldred hurler Megan Shafer.
The Spartans kept up their offensive barrage while the Yellowjackets struggled
to catch up to Oliphant’s speed and location. S. S. Seward improved its record
to 3-2, 1-0 OCIAA. Eldred is 0-2, 0-2 OCIAA.

GRAHAMSVILLE, NY — Fielding a team that is predominantly freshmen
and sophomores, Eldred managed to beat out the Chester boys and girls in
the school’s first meet of the season. The previously scheduled season opener
against Sullivan West was postponed until May 5 due to wintry weather. “We
feel that both the girls’ and boys’ team have a good shot at a winning record
this year,” said Coach Frank Schorling. In terms of the Relays, Eldred has
sent runners to the prestigious event the past two years. “We look forward
to the Section Nine meet,” said Schorling. Due to concerns about security,
Eldred will not be sending a team to the prestigious Penn Relays this year.
Eldred has participated in the Penn Relays for the past two years. The April
15 victory over Chester also resulted in a loss to Tri-Valley, leaving both
