Lend the river a hand
UPPER DELAWARE — Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River
Superintendent Dave Forney announces the fifth annual D&H Canal towpath
trail cleanup. Volunteers are needed on Friday, April 25 to clear brush and
restore the towpath trail along the bank of the Delaware River. The trail
takes you under the former Delaware Aqueduct, completed in 1848. Now known
as the Roebling Bridge, the structure connects Lackawaxen, PA, and Minisink
Ford, Town of Highland, NY.

Every tree counts
NARROWSBURG, NY — The Narrowsburg Beautification Group has
scheduled a Tree Planting Day on Saturday, May 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00
p.m. at the Tusten Veterans Memorial Park with initial grant funding of $1,000
from Sullivan Renaissance. This is the first event of this year’s beautification
effort in Narrowsburg.
The group invites all interested individuals, civic groups
and businesses to participate. Donations of suitable perennials and/or financial
contributions for materials are appreciated.
Meet at the gazebo by the Narrowsburg Bridge. The rain date
is Saturday, May 10.

Audubon nature walk
WURTSBORO, NY — The Sullivan County Chapter of The National
Audubon Society will hold a nature walk to Hornbeck’s Basin on Sunday, May
4. Meet leader Renee Davis in the parking lot off Rte. 209 just north of
Wurtsboro at 8:00 a.m. This walk is free and everyone is invited to attend.

MILANVILLE, PA — Has spring finally arrived? Join members
of the Delaware Highlands Conservancy on Saturday morning, May 3 for a walk
along John Davis Road in search of May wildflowers and other signs of spring.
Naturalist Ed Wesely will lead the walk.
Participants will meet at the conservancy’s Butterfly Barn
on River Road at 10:00 a.m. for light refreshments. Comfortable shoes are
suggested for the one and a half-mile circuit walk. Bring binoculars if you
have them.

A walk into spring’s vibrance
BIG INDIAN, NY — Come experience the return of spring filled
with song on Sunday, April 27 with Tom Alworth, executive director of The
Catskill Center for Conservation and Development. Alworth will share his
passion for science, literature, and the magical Catskill Mountains. Stroll
along Rochester Hollow, identify early spring arrivals and reflect upon the
enchanting words of John Burroughs, one of America’s greatest naturalists
who once remarked, “Secrets lurk on all sides. There is news in every bush.
What a new look the woods have.”
A stop at the Burrough’s Memorial along the trail will be
a highlight of the walk. Please meet at 8:30 a.m. at the DEC trailhead kiosk.
To get there, pass through Big Indian on Rte. 28 West and then turn right
on Matayas Road, which will end at the trailhead. Bring lunch and water for
this moderate 3.5-mile walk.
