WAYSL OTCHERET BARKA
GLEN SPEY, NY — Professor Waysl Otcheret Barka died Friday,
April 11, 2003, at Achieve Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Liberty,
NY. He was 94.
Professor Barka was a poet, writer and philosopher and was
born in 1908 in Ukraine. He was a member of St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian
Orthodox Church, Glen Spey, NY.
Survivors include a son and two granddaughters in England.
A Liturgy Mass was held on Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at St.
Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Glen Spey, NY. The Reverend Nester
Kowal officiated. Burial will be in St. Andrew’s Cemetery, South Bound Brook,
NJ.
ELSA BUETTNER FRIEDEL
ROCHESTER, NY — Elsa Buettner Friedel, long-term resident of
Narrowsburg, NY died April 9, 2003 in Rochester, NY. She was 92.
The daughter of Frederick Geugelin and Elisabeth Zimmermann,
she was born in Blansingen, Germany on September 25, 1910. In 1930, she emigrated
to America. She and fellow-immigrant, Arthur Buettner, were married in 1934;
in 1947, they and their two children, Rudolph and Elvera, moved to Narrowsburg,
NY where they opened “Buettner’s Dry Cleaning” on Main Street and served
the Callicoon, Hortonville, and Beach Lake area with twice-a-week delivery
service.
When illness forced Arthur to retire, they moved to Rochester,
NY where Arthur passed away in 1970. In 1976 she married William Friedel.
Elsa and Will lived in Scranton, PA where Elsa continued to reside after
Will’s untimely death in 1978. She returned to Rochester, NY in 1982 and
became an active member the North Chili community.
Sister of the late Luise Berner of Kenoza Lake, Elsa is survived
by son, Rudolph H. Buettner and his wife Faith, retired high school teacher
and daughter Elvera B. Berry, and husband Paul, professor at Roberts Wesleyan
College, both of North Chili, NY; five grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren;
three nieces, and a nephew.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 23 at 10:00
a.m. at Pearce Memorial Church, 4322 Buffalo Road, North Chili NY. Memorials
in lieu of flowers may be sent to Isaiah House, 71 Prince Street, Rochester,
14605 or Pearce Memorial Church.
ROBERT WILLIAM GORDON
GREELEY, PA — Robert William Gordon died Saturday, March 29,
2003, at the Julia Ribaudo Senior Care Center, Lake Ariel, PA. He was 69.
The son of the late Harry and Elizabeth Barker Gordon, Mr.
Gordon was born in Chester, NJ. He was an auto body repairman at the Augusta
Body Shop, Augusta, NJ, and a member of the National Guard.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Lois Gordon of Greeley,
PA; three daughters, Donna Hahn of Flanders, NJ, Jean Badoud of Lackawaxen,
PA, and Deborah DeFebo of Greely, PA; two sons, Robert Gordon of Jefferson,
NJ, and Rick Gordon of Greeley, PA; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A private service was held at the convenience of the family.
Cremation was conducted by H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg, PA.

ERWIN W. HALLOCK
SWEETWATER, TN — Erwin W. Hallock, a former Glen Spey, NY resident,
died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at the Cleveland Community Hospital, Cleveland,
TN. He was 77.
The son of the late Wilbur J. and Margaret E. Weber Hallock,
he was born in Yulan, NY. Mr. Hallock was a World War II veteran of the
Army Air Force, and a life member, former fire chief and former fire commissioner
of the Sparrowbush Fire Department.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Mae Bodensieck Hallock at
home; three sons, Fredrick E. of Wallkill, James W. of Quakertown, PA, and
Walter A. of Jeffersonville, NY; two brothers, Charles of Highland Lake,
NY, and Lawrence of California; a sister, Roberta Jessup of Barryville, NY;
five grandchildren; two great-grandsons and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at the Gray-Parker
Funeral Home, Port Jervis, NY. Burial will be made in Pine Hill Cemetery,
Sparrowbush, NY.
GRAHAM ROGERS LOBB
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Graham Rogers Lobb, a former Hawley, PA
resident, died March 15, 2003, at Georgetown University Hospital, Washington,
D.C. He was 79.
The son of the late George W. and Frances Watts Lobb, he was
born in Honesdale, PA. Mr. Lobb worked as a copy boy at The New York Herald
Tribune. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in
the Pacific and with the Signal Intelligence Service at MacArthur’s headquarters.
He re-enlisted after the war and served with the 88th Infantry Division Headquarters
in Italy. He later served in Trieste with the Trieste U.S. troops. In 1949,
Mr. Lobb joined the U.S. Foreign Service and was assigned to the U.S. Embassy
in Afghanistan, followed by London, the Hague, Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Paris,
Accra, Ghana and Washington. He retired from the Foreign Service in 1981
and then worked for several telecommunications firms, before retiring from
Contel ASC in 1988.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Roberta; a son, David,
of Colorado; and a daughter, Jennifer, of Washington, D.C.
ROSEANNE LYNCH
WESTTOWN, NY — Roseanne Lynch, a lifelong area resident, died
Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at Bon Secours Hospital, Port Jervis, NY. She was
62.
The daughter of the late Stanley and Rose Bastek Calak, she
was born in Westtown, NY. The widow of John J. Lynch, she was a registered
nurse at the former Mercy Hospital, Port Jervis, NY, and a member of St.
Stanislaus Church, Pine Island, NY.
Survivors include a daughter, Suzanne Monteleone of Narrowsburg,
NY; a son, Dale S. LeBar of Westtown, NY; three grandchildren; a brother,
Richard Calak; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister,
Marion Nebus.
A Funeral Mass was offered Thursday, April 10, 2003, at St.
Stanislaus Church, Pine Island, NY. Burial was in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

LEO H. O’BANKS
WURTSBORO, NY — Leo H. O’Banks, a lifelong area resident, died
Friday, April 4, 2003, at the Horton Campus of the Orange Regional Medical
Center, Middletown, NY. He was 90.
The son of the late Christopher and Pauline Smith O’Banks,
he was born in High Falls, NY. Mr. O’Banks was a retired brakeman for the
New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad and the widower of Gladys O’Banks.
Survivors include his wife, Madeline Martin O’Banks, at home;
two sons, Leo Jr. of Florida, and Craig of White Lake, NY; a daughter, Michele
Amodio of Maybrook, NY; a sister, Mildred Doolittle of Washington; four step-children;
Fred Compton, Ralph “Butch” Compton, Sue Shafer and Lucy Stevens; eight grandchildren;
seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased
by two brothers, Eldred and Robert O’Banks.
Services were held Monday, April 7, 2003, at the Gridley-Horan
Funeral Home, Walden. Burial was in the Wallkill Valley Cemetery, Walden,
NY.

WILLIAM H. TESSEYMAN III
GLEN SPEY, NY — William H. Tesseyman III, longtime resident
of the area, died Thursday, April 10, 2003 at home. He was 62.
The son of the late William and Eva Gerry Tesseyman, he was
born on August 9, 1940 in Long Island, NY.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a retiree from the Nassau
County Department of Public Works.
Survivors include his wife, Priscilla Darch Tesseyman at home;
his four sons, William Tesseyman Jr. and his wife, Penny, of Binghamton,
NY, Charles Tesseyman of Glen Spey, NY, Michael Tesseyman and his wife, Lori,
of Callicoon, NY, Paul Tesseyman and his wife, Sylvia, of Damascus, PA; his
two daughters, Kathleen Miller and her husband, Michael, of Fayetteville,
N.C.; Tracey Tesseyman, of Damascus, PA; his stepdaughter, Debbie White of
Glen Spey, NY; a brother, Edward Tesseyman of Florida; a sister, Linda Scott
of Florida; and nine grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his sister, Doris Thorne.
Funeral services were held the Gray-Parker Funeral Home, Port
Jervis, NY on Sunday, April 13. The Rev. Douglas Lee officiated.
Burial and committal service were on Monday, April 14 at Callicoon
Cemetery in Callicoon, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to Lumberland
Fire Department Ambulance, Glen Spey, NY 12737.
ROBERT B. TOWNSEND
CATO, NY — Robert B. Townsend, a former resident of Cochecton,
NY, died Thursday, April 3, 2003. He was 80.
Mr. Townsend was a retired farmer and was born in Cochecton,
NY. He served as president and vice president of the Cato-Meridian School
board, supervisor for the Town of Ira and assessment review board officer.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Florence Fulton Townsend,
at home; seven children, Bonnie Townsend, Brad Townsend, Sid Townsend, Robin
Hills and Roxanne Miller, all of Cato, Dian Wade of New Jersey and Mark Townsend
of Texas; 18 grandchildren; and three sisters, Alma Futch of Georgia, Gladys
O’Brien of New Jersey, and Adelaide Geiselman of Monticello, NY.
A memorial service was held Sunday, April 6, 2003, at the Cato
Union Church. Burial was in the Ira Union Cemetery.
