RICHARD M. BRIECKE

HAWLEY, PA — Richard Briecke of Tink Wig Mountain Lake Estates in Hawley, a retired 32-year letter carrier in E. Northport Post Office and a 10-year area resident, died Thursday, February 20, 2003 at Mercy Hospital in Scranton. He was 75.

Son of Frederick Briecke and Helen Margetson Briecke, he was born in Woodhaven, NY.

He was a member of New Hope Church in White Mills. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II. After retirement from the post office he worked at Dutch’s Market in Hawley.

Survivors include his wife, Victoria Briecke; three sons, Richard, Stevie and David; four daughters, Linda, Cathy, Donna and Gail; three stepchildren, David, Laura and Shari; a brother Edward of Holbrook, NY; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a niece.

Services were held Tuesday, February 25, at Teeters’ East Chapel in Hawley. Cremation took place at the H.G. Smith Crematory in Stroudsburg.

EDWARD JAMES BURNS

PORT JERVIS, NY — Edward James Burns of Port Jervis, a retired guidance counselor at Delaware Valley School and a 36-year area resident, died Sunday, February 9, 2003 at the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center in Scranton, PA. He was 79.

He grew up in New York City and was a graduate of Columbia University.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Port Jervis. He taught driver education for many years in Port Jervis. He was an Army Air Force veteran who flew 68 bombing missions over Europe during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen J. Sloyan Burns of Port Jervis; three sons, Thomas and wife Jackie of Port Jervis, Robert and wife Connie of Mendocino, CA and James T. and wife Maria of Shohola, PA; a daughter, Elaine Godard of Allentown, PA; six grandsons; nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Resurrection was offered at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Port Jervis. The Rev. Dennis M. Dinan officiated. Burial will be a the convenience of the family.

CAROLE A. HASEK CERRELLA

HAWLEY, PA— Carole A. Hasek Cerrella of Fawn Lake Forest in Hawley, formerly of Hauppauge, NY, a cashier at Eckerd Drugs in Milford, died Saturday, February 22, 2003 in Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. She was 58.

Daughter of Charles Hasek and Lillian Kopacek Hasek, she was born in Astoria, NY.

Survivors include her husband, John Cerrella of Fawn Lake Forest in Hawley; a brother, Charles Hasek of Bethpage, NY; a sister-in-law Francine Hasek of Bethpage, NY; two nieces and three grandnieces.

Services were held at Teeters’ East Chapel in Hawley. The Rev. Joseph P. Kitch officiated. Burial was in Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, NY.

ROSE DAUBEK

LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — Rose Daubek of Livingston Manor, a homemaker and 15-year area resident, died Tuesday, February 18, 2003 at the Achieve Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Liberty. She was 95.

Daughter of the late Joseph and Rose Wyko Daubek, she was born September 8, 1907 in West Hurley.

Survivors include three nieces, Dorothy Moutoux of Livingston Manor, Myrtle Smith of Liberty and Alice Daubek of Swan Lake; and two nephews, Bill Daubek of Willowemoc and Jim Daubek of Masonville.

Graveside services will be held at the Bon Air Cemetery in Roscoe in the spring.

ROBERT W. DECKER

BOYNTON BEACH, FL – Robert W. Decker of Boynton Beach, formerly of Damascus, PA, an associate of Mutual of New York Insurance Company for 35 years, died Sunday, February 16, 2003 at Bethesda Memorial Hospital in Boynton Beach. He was 76.

Son of Warren and Anne Decker, he was born November 1, 1925 in Binghamton, NY.

He was a US Navy veteran of World War II and was assigned to PT boat service in the Pacific arena. He formerly owned and operated a farm in Tyler Hill. He was a member of the Masonic Order Lodge in Windsor, NY, the VFW and American Legion Posts in Boynton Beach and a member of Palm Beach Leisureville in Boynton Beach.

Survivors include his wife, Betty B. Decker; two sons, Guy R. of Tampa and Brett W. of Marietta, GA; two grandchildren; three brothers, Louis of Kirkwood, NY, Ronald of Binghamton, NY and Samuel of Sacramenton, CA.

A memorial service was held at the Lutheran Church in Narrowsburg, NY. Burial was at the Hillside Cemeter in Damascus.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, the VFW or the donor’s favorite charity.

LEON HENRY DZIEKONSKI

HAWLEY, PA — Leon Henry Dziekonski of Hawley, a retired self-employed mason, and former owner of Mountain Merchant store in Blooming Grove, died Thursday, February 13, 2003 in Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. He was 76.

Son of Stanley and Viola Lemanski Dziekonski, he was born in Jersey City, NJ.

He served in the Merchant Marines and was a member of Elks & Moose Lodges in Arizona and Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church in Blooming Grove.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Pasqua Fallacaro Dziekonski; two sisters, Helen Mazurk of Blooming Grove and Stella Franko of Fair Lawn, NJ; two stepdaughters, Patricia Brady of Palm Harbor, FL and Barbara Famighetti of Elizabeth, NJ; four grandsons; nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered in Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church. The Rev. Gerard L, pastor, officiated. Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery in Paupack.

WILLIAM A. GLASS

PORT JERVIS, NY — William A. Glass of Port Jervis, an attorney and a 24-year area resident, died Saturday, February 8, 2003 at Orange Regional Medical Center, Horton Campus in Middletown. He was 57.

Son of Irving and Celia Hamick Glass, he was born August 3, 1945 in Brooklyn.

He graduated from Hunter College in New York City and St. John’s University Law School; was a member of the Orange County Bar Association, New York State Bar Association, and New York State City Judges Association and member and former vice president of the Orange County Magistrates Association.

A member and former president of Temple Beth-El in Port Jervis, he was a former acting city court judge and former City Corporation Council. He was a member of the Port Jervis County Club and former member and past president of the Port Jervis Rotary Club and a former member of the Port Jervis/Tri-State Chamber of Comerce Board of Directors.

Survivor include his wife of 34 years, Arleen Brown Glass at home; a son, Jason of Boston, MA; a daughter Rebecca Glass of Huntersville, NC; a sister, Phyllis Glass of Los Angeles, CA and a niece, Robin Mazza of Rochester, NY.

Services were held at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home in Port Jervis. Cantor Barry Butensky officiated. Burial was at the Beth-El Cemetery in Port Jervis.

ARTHUR JOHN LEEWE

CALLICOON, NY — Arthur John Leewe, a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, February 20, 2003 in Hackensack University Medical Hospital in Hackensack, NJ. He was 67.

Son of the late John and Annette Geiseleman Leewe, he was born December 23, 1935 in Callicoon.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Obernburg, St. Mary’s Holy Name Society, Church Choir, Interfaith Outreach United of Callicoon and Hortonville Beautification Committee. He also did volunteer work for fire departments, churches and the youth of the community.

Survivors include his wife, Florence Wood Leewe at home; a daughter Linda Kitson and husband Thomas of Obernburg; a son, Michael Leewe and wife Jeanne of Obernburg; and six grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a sister, Joan Mary Leewe.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Mary’s Church Obernburg. Father Gus Richardson OFM officiated. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Obernburg.

ROBERT T. McCABE

DAMASCUS, PA — Robert T. McCabe of Damascus, a retired letter carrier for the US Postal System died Sunday, February 16, 2003 at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 85.

Son of James and Rose Ramiezel McCabe, he was born June 22, 1917 in Manhattan. He was the widower of Mary M. Lane who died in 1993.

He was a member of St. Mary’s R.C. Church in Obernburg and the Delaware Valley Senior Citizens. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include three daughters, Marilyn Field of Preston, CT, Susan Foldi of Stuart, FL and Denyce and husband Daniel Sambrato of Nanuet; a son Robert Jr. and wife Marie of Fair Lawn, NJ; a sister, Flornce Jakobsen and husband Carl of Bergenfield, NJ; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. George’s R.C. Church in Jeffersonville. Burial was at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Obernburg.

ELFRIEDE ZIKOLL RECKNAGEL

EQUINUNK, PA – Elfriede Zikoll Recknagel of Equinunk, died Sunday, February 16, 2003 at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale. She was 97.

Daughter and last surviving member of the Heinrich Cornelius and Fredericke von de Heide Zikoll family, she was born in Unna-Massen, Germany.

She came to the United States in 1934 and obtained her citizenship. She and her husband Robert owned and operated Recknagel’s Dock Casino in Lindenhurst, Long Island.

Survivors include three nieces, Herta Zikoll Lepp, with whom she resided, Gerta Zikoll Cornell and Delores Mannale; greatnieces and greatnephews.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Martha and Louise; three brothers, Hugo, Paul and Alfred; and two nieces Else Zikoll Dutz and Ruth Zikoll Hofman.

Services were held at the Hessling Funeral Home in Honesdale. The Rev. Kathy Grecco, pastor of Equinunk United Methodist Church, officiated. Cremation followed at Maple Hill at Salem Crematory in Archbald. Burial was in the family plot in Germany.

ERI TRIVELPIECE

HAWLEY, PA — Eri Trivelpiece of Blooming Grove in Hawley, roadmaster of Blooming Grove Twp., died Friday, February 21, 2003 at home. He was 75.

Son of Henry Trivelpiece and Ethel Johnson Trivelpiece, he was born in Blooming Grove Twp.

He was a former equipment operator for Frank Weist Construction, charter member and former chief of Blooming Grove Fire Dept., Blooming Grove Fire Marshall and current supervisor for 20 years in Blooming Grove Twp.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Trivelpiece of Blooming Grove Twp.; a son, Hugh of Blooming Grove Twp.; a grandson, Tayler of Honesdale; a sister; niece and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Trivelpiece Swingle.

Cremation took place at the H.G. Smith Crematory in Stroudsburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Blooming Grove Fire Dept.
